Badminton At The 1962 Asian Games
Badminton tournament was held at the 1962 Asian Games at the Istora Gelora Bung Karno, Istora Senayan in Jakarta, Indonesia from 25 August to 1 September 1962. The host nation, Indonesia won five out of six possible gold medals. Indonesia won both the team events; in men's team final Indonesian team defeated Thailand by 5-0 and in Women's team final they defeated the Malayan team by 3-2 scoreline. Istora Gelora Bung Karno
Gelora Bung Karno Sports Palace ( id, Istana Olahraga Gelora Bung Karno, abbreviated as ''Istora''), the formerly name ''Istora Senayan'' is an indoor sporting arena located in Gelora Bung Karno Sports Complex, Jakarta, Indonesia. The capacity of the arena after 2018 reopening is 7,166. This arena is usually used for badminton tournaments. Its maiden event was the 1961 Thomas Cup. It was also used during the 1962 Asian Games and was renovated to host the 2018 edition. Its first post-renovation event was the 2018 Indonesia Masters. During the latter Games, it hosted the badminton and later stages of basketball events. The arena originally was planned to stage the 2023 FIBA Basketball World Cup and becoming the only Indonesian venue in the three-country joint bid but was moved to a newly-built arena inside the complex. Raphi Kanchanaraphi
Raphi Kanchanaraphi (1936 – February 19, 2010) was a world-class badminton player who represented both Thailand and Canada in international competition, and won national doubles and mixed doubles titles in both countries. Career Known for his anticipation and racket control, Kanchanaraphi was one of a cadre of fine Thai doubles players who helped Thailand to strongly contend for the Thomas Cup (men's international team competition trophy) in both 1961 and 1964. In partnership with Narong Bhornchima, Kanchanaraphi won 15 of his 18 Thomas Cup doubles matches in those two seasons, the wins including both of his doubles matches against Indonesia in the 1961 Challenge Round. Kanchanaraphi and Bhornchima were men's doubles runners-up in the prestigious All-England Championships in 1962, narrowly losing to the famous Danes Finn Kobbero and Jorgen Hammergaard Hansen. Retno Kustijah (born 19 June 1942; as Retno Koestijah) is a former badminton player from Indonesia who competed internationally from the early 1960s to the early 1970s. Career Though she played singles in high level events, Kustijah's greatest success came in women's doubles with regular partner Minarni. They were the first of only two Indonesian teams to win women's doubles at the prestigious All England Championships (1968). Their titles together included the quadrennial Asian Games (1962, 1966), and the Malaysia (1966, 1967), Singapore (1967), New Zealand (1968), Canadian (1969), and U.S. (1969) Opens. Minarni
Minarni (later Minarni Soedaryanto; 10 May 1944 in Pasuruan, East Java – 14 May 2003 in Pertamina Central Hospital, South Jakarta) was an Indonesian badminton player who won major titles around the world and who represented her country internationally between 1959 and 1975. In 1968, Minarni became the first Indonesian to reach the final of women's singles at the All England Open, and with Retno Kustijah formed the first of only two Indonesian women's doubles teams yet to capture the All England Open title. She also won titles at the Indonesian National Championships, the quadrennial Asian Games, the Asian Championships, and at the Malaysia, U.S., Canada, Singapore, and New Zealand Opens. Yew Cheng Hoe (born 1943) is a former world-class Malaysian badminton player. Career He played on the Malaysian Thomas Cup (men's international) teams of 1963-1964 and 1966-1967, the latter of which won the world championship. Dato' Billy Ng Seow Meng (Chinese: 黄绍铭, born 1940) is a former Malaysian badminton player. Career Ng was the son of Ng Ngoh Tee, who was of Teochew Chinese origin and represented Johor in Badminton championships during the 1920s and 1930s and his wife Mak Cheng Hai, who was a distant relative of another state badminton champion Wong Peng Soon. Billy made his first foray into badminton in August 1959 when he was crowned Malaysian Schoolboy Singles Champion. Then Billy was a student at the renowned Foon Yew High School, Johor Bahru. Later that month, Billy led the Malayan Combined Schools against the Indonesian Youth Team where Billy defeated Lin Dan's current coach Tang Xien Hu in straight sets 15-12 15–12.
