The Arab Junior Athletics Championships is an biennial international athletics competition between athletes under the age of 20 ( juniors) from Arabic countries. It is organised by the Arab Athletic Association. If was first held in 1984 – seven years after the inauguration of the senior Arab Athletics Championships. Athletics is a group of sporting events that involves competitive running, jumping, throwing, and walking. The most common types of athletics competitions are track and field, road running, cross country running, and racewalking. The results of racing events are decided by finishing position (or time, where measured), while the jumps and throws are won by the athlete that achieves the highest or furthest measurement from a series of attempts. The simplicity of the competitions, and the lack of a need for expensive equipment, makes athletics one of the most common types of sports in the world. The 2016 Arab Junior Athletics Championships was the seventeenth edition of the international athletics competition for under-20 athletes from Arab countries. It took place between 5–8 May at the Lalla-Setti Athletics Stadium in Tlemcen, Algeria. It was the first time that Algeria hosted the event. A total of 44 athletics events were contested, 22 for men and 22 for women. Around 800 athletes from 20 countries were expected to appear at the competition, though only 232 athletes from 15 nations ultimately did so. Bahrain took the most gold medals with 16 while Tunisia won the next highest with 9. The 2014 Arab Junior Athletics Championships was the sixteenth edition of the international athletics competition for under-20 athletes from Arab countries. It took place between 23–26 April in Cairo, Egypt. It was the fifth time that the Egyptian capital hosted the event. A total of 44 athletics events were contested, 22 for men and 22 for women. The host nation Egypt comfortably topped the medal table with seventeen gold medals and 47 in total. Bahrain was the next most successful country with 14 golds among its 28 medals. The 2012 Arab Junior Athletics Championships was the fifteenth edition of the international athletics competition for under-20 athletes from Arab countries. It took place between 16–19 May at Amman International Stadium in Amman, Jordan. It was the first time that Jordan hosted the event. A total of 42 athletics events were contested, 21 for men and 21 for women. The men's 10,000 metres and women's 5000 metres were dropped from the programme for this edition. Egypt topped the medal table with nine gold medals, narrowly edging Tunisia which had eight golds and the same total of 23 overall.
