Antelope County, Nebraska
Antelope County is a County (United States), county located in the U.S. state of Nebraska. As of the 2020 United States Census, the population was 6,295. Its county seat is Neligh, Nebraska, Neligh. The county was formed in 1871. It received its name after a group of early settlers killed and ate several pronghorn. Although these are not true antelope, they are colloquially known by that name. The Ashfall Fossil Beds National Natural Landmark is located within the county. In the Vehicle registration plates of Nebraska, Nebraska license plate system, Antelope County is represented by the prefix 26 (it had the 26th-largest number of vehicles registered in the state when the license plate system was established in 1922). Pronghorn
The pronghorn (, ) (''Antilocapra americana'') is a species of artiodactyl (even-toed, hoofed) mammal indigenous to interior western and central North America. Though not an antelope, it is known colloquially in North America as the American antelope, prong buck, pronghorn antelope and prairie antelope, because it closely resembles the antelopes of the Old World and fills a similar ecological niche due to parallel evolution. U.S. Route 20 or U.S. Highway 20 (US 20) is an east–west United States Numbered Highway that stretches from the Pacific Northwest east to New England. Ashfall Fossil Beds State Historical Park
The Ashfall Fossil Beds of Antelope County in northeastern Nebraska are rare fossil sites of the type called lagerstätten that, due to extraordinary local conditions, capture an ecological "snapshot" in time of a range of well-preserved fossilized organisms. Ash from a Yellowstone hotspot eruption 10-12 million years ago created these fossilized bone beds. The ash depth was up to 1 foot. The site is protected as Ashfall Fossil Beds State Historical Park, a park that includes a visitor center with interpretive displays and working fossil preparation laboratory, and a protected ongoing excavation site, the Hubbard Rhino Barn, featuring fossil ''Teleoceras'' (native hippo-like ancestral rhinoceros) and ancestral horses. Nebraska Highway 70 is a highway in central Nebraska. Its western terminus is at an intersection with Nebraska Highway 2 and Nebraska Highway 92 east of Broken Bow. Its eastern terminus is at Nebraska Highway 14 in Elgin. Route description Nebraska Highway 70 begins at an intersection with NE 2 and NE 92 just east of Broken Bow.
