Viriato Da Cruz
Viriato Clemente da Cruz (25 March 1928 – 13 June 1973) was an Angolan poet and politician, who was born in Kikuvo, Porto Amboim, Portuguese Angola, and died in Beijing, People's Republic of China. He is considered one of the most important Angolan poets of his time. He wrote poems in Portuguese language, Portuguese, some of which include phrases in the Angolan Bantu language of Kimbundu. He took part in the political struggle to free Angola from Portugal, Portuguese rule. Political work Cruz was educated in Luanda, the capital of Portuguese West Africa, Angola, which was then ruled by Portugal. Between 1948 and 1952, Viriato da Cruz became part of the Association of the Native Sons of Angola. In 1948, he helped found the Movement of the New Intellectuals of Angola. Suffering from tuberculosis, Da Cruz retreated to southern Angola in 1948 and 1949. There he wrote poems that established him as the most important Angolan lyrical poet of his generation. António Jacinto
António Jacinto do Amaral Martins (28 September 1924 – 23 June 1991) was an Angolan poet and politician. He was also known by his pseudonym Orlando Tavora. Biography Jacinto was born in Luanda, Angola, to parents of Portuguese descent. He was raised and studied in the interior of Angola in the remote town of Golungo Alto in Cuanza Norte Province. After having obtained his license in Luanda, he started working as a civil servant. He stood out as a protesting poet, and as a result of his political militancy, was first arrested in 1959. Jacinto was ultimately sent to the Tarrafal concentration camp in Cape Verde from 1961 to 1972. His first book of poems was published in 1961, the same year of his arrest and imprisonment. His imprisonment received international attention, and he was transferred in 1972 to Lisbon where, on parole, he worked as an accountant. Ernesto Lara Filho
Ernesto Pires Barreto de Lara Filho (1932–1977) was a revolutionary Portuguese Angolan writer and agronomist and brother of Angolan poet Alda Lara. Born in Benguela in 1932, he was educated in Angola and Portugal before he began work as a journalist in Luanda in the 1950s. An outspoken supporter of Angolan independence, he was arrested by the Portuguese security agency PIDE for his revolutionary activities. In his life Ernesto Lara Filho published several notable books and anthologies of poetry. He was also one of the founders of the Association of Angolan Writers after independence. He died in an automobile accident in 1977, at age 44.
