This list excludes deputy chiefs of mission designated chargés d'affaires by the incumbent chief of mission during the chief of mission's temporary absence from Turkmenistan or during brief hiatuses between chiefs of mission. Note: The United States recognized Turkmenistan on December 25, 1991, and established diplomatic relations on February 19, 1992. Matthew Stephen Klimow (born June 10, 1952) is an American diplomat who has served as the United States Ambassador to Turkmenistan since 2019. On August 31, 2020, Klimow assumed office as the acting Inspector General of the Department of State and left on December 11. Early life and education Born in the state of New York, Klimow earned his Bachelor of Science at the United States Military Academy in 1974 and a Master of Arts from Webster University in St. Louis, Missouri in 1982. He received a Masters of Military Art and Science from the School of Advanced Military Studies at the United States Army Command and General Staff College in 1989 with a thesis entitled ''Surrender - a soldier's legal, ethical, and moral obligations; with Philippine case study''.

Richard Monroe Miles (born January 8, 1937) is an American diplomat. Life Richard Miles was born in Little Rock, Arkansas, on January 8, 1937. He grew up in rural and small-town Indiana. After serving in the Marine Corps from 1954 to 1957, he obtained degrees from Bakersfield College, the University of California at Berkeley and Indiana University. He is also a graduate of the U.S. Army Russian Institute, Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Germany. Miles worked for the South Carolina Voter Education Project from 1964 to 1967 in the field of voter registration and political leadership training. Ambassadors of the United States are persons nominated by the president to serve as the country's diplomatic representatives to foreign nations, international organizations, and as ambassadors-at-large. Under Article II, Section 2 of the U.S. Constitution, their appointment must be confirmed by the United States Senate; while an ambassador may be appointed during a recess, they can serve only until the end of the next session of Congress, unless subsequently confirmed. Allan Phillip Mustard is a retired American agricultural economist and career diplomat who served as the United States Ambassador to Turkmenistan from 2014 to 2019. He was the chair of the OpenStreetMap Foundation (2019-2021), and advises the Caspian Policy Center. Early years Mustard's father, Donald, was a veterinarian; his mother was a teacher. Mustard was raised on a dairy farm in Brady, in Grays Harbor County, Washington, where he attended Montesano High School. He was subsequently educated at Grays Harbor College.
