List Of Minor-planet Groups
A minor-planet group is a population of minor planets that share broadly similar orbits. Members are generally unrelated to each other, unlike in an asteroid family, which often results from the break-up of a single asteroid. It is customary to name a group of asteroids after the first member of that group to be discovered, which is often the largest. Groups out to the orbit of Earth There are relatively few asteroids that orbit close to the Sun. Several of these groups are hypothetical at this point in time, with no members having yet been discovered; as such, the names they have been given are provisional. * Vulcanoid asteroids are hypothetical asteroids that orbit entirely within the orbit of Mercury (have an aphelion of less than 0.3874 AU). A few searches for vulcanoids have been conducted but none have been discovered so far. * ꞌAylóꞌchaxnim asteroids (previously named Vatira) are asteroids that orbit entirely within the orbit of Venus (have an aphelion of less ...

3360 Syrinx
3360 Syrinx (originally designated 1981 VA) is an Apollo and Mars crosser asteroid discovered in 1981. It approaches Earth to within 40  Gm three times in the 21st century: 33 Gm in 2039, 40 Gm in 2070, and 24 Gm in 2085. On 2012-Sep-20 it passed from the Earth at apparent magnitude 17.0. In opposition on 23 November 2012, it brightened to magnitude 16.0. It is a member of the Alinda group The Alinda asteroids are a dynamical group of asteroids with a semi-major axis of about 2.5 AU and an orbital eccentricity approximately between 0.4 and 0.65. As an Alinda asteroid it makes approaches to Jupiter, Earth, and Venus. For a time, it was the lowest numbered asteroid that had not been named. In Novembe ...

4179 Toutatis
4179 Toutatis, provisional designation , is an elongated, stony asteroid and slow rotator, classified as a near-Earth object and potentially hazardous asteroid of the Apollo asteroid and Alinda asteroid groups, approximately 2.5 kilometers in diameter. Discovered by French astronomer Christian Pollas at Caussols in 1989, the asteroid was named after Toutatis from Celtic mythology. Toutatis is also a Mars-crosser asteroid with a chaotic orbit produced by a 3:1 resonance with the planet Jupiter, a 1:4 resonance with the planet Earth, and frequent close approaches to the terrestrial planets, including Earth. In December 2012, Toutatis passed within about 18 lunar distances of Earth. The Chinese lunar probe Chang'e 2 flew by the asteroid at a distance of 3.2 kilometers and a relative velocity of 10.73 km/s. Toutatis approached Earth again in 2016, but will not make another notably close approach until 2069. Properties Toutatis was first sighted on 10 February 1934, a ...

3628 Božněmcová
3628 Božněmcová, provisional designation , is a rare-type asteroid from the middle region of the asteroid belt, approximately 7 kilometers in diameter. It was discovered on 25 November 1979, by Czech astronomer Zdeňka Vávrová at Kleť Observatory in the Czech Republic. It is named for Czech writer Božena Němcová. Orbit and classification ''Božněmcová'' orbits the Sun in the central main-belt at a distance of 1.8–3.3  AU once every 4.04 years (1,477 days). Its orbit has an eccentricity of 0.30 and an inclination of 7 ° with respect to the ecliptic. It was first identified as at Lowell Observatory in 1930, extending the body's observation arc by 49 years prior to its official discovery observation at Klet. Physical characteristics In the SMASS taxonomy, ''Božněmcová'' is a bright O-type asteroid, a rare group with spectra that best fits those of the L6 and LL6 ordinary chondrite-type meteorites. Rotation period In September 2007, a rotational ligh ...

2608 Seneca
2608 Seneca, provisional designation , is a stony asteroid and sub-kilometer near-Earth object of the Amor group, approximately 0.9 kilometers in diameter. It was discovered on 17 February 1978, by German astronomer Hans-Emil Schuster at ESO's La Silla Observatory in northern Chile, and named after Roman philosopher Seneca. Orbit ''Seneca'' orbits the Sun at a distance of 1.1–4.0  AU once every 3 years and 12 months (1,457 days). Its orbit has an eccentricity of 0.57 and an inclination of 15 ° with respect to the ecliptic. The body's observation arc begins with its official discovery observation in 1978, as no precoveries were taken, and no prior identifications were made. Close approaches ''Seneca'' has an ''Earth minimum orbital intersection distance'' of , which corresponds to 51.5 lunar distances. On 22 March 2062, it will pass from the Earth. Physical characteristics In the Tholen taxonomy, ''Seneca'' is a stony S-type asteroid. Photometry In March ...

1915 Quetzálcoatl
1915 Quetzálcoatl, provisional designation , is a very eccentric, stony asteroid classified as near-Earth object, about half a kilometer in diameter. It was discovered on 9 March 1953, by American astronomer Albert George Wilson at Palomar Observatory, California. It was named for Quetzalcoatl from Aztec mythology. Orbit and classification ''Quetzálcoatl'' is an Amor asteroid – a subgroup of near-Earth asteroids that approach the orbit of Earth from beyond, but do not cross it – and a member of the Alinda family of highly eccentric asteroids. It orbits the Sun at a distance of 1.1–4.0  AU with a period of around 4 years. The osculating orbit as of 2017 has a period just over 4 years, but the period varies because Quetzálcoatl is near the 3:1 orbital resonance with Jupiter (and possibly because it is near the 1:4 resonance with Earth). Its orbit has an eccentricity of 0.57 and an inclination of 20 ° with respect to the ecliptic. When it was discovered in Marc ...

1607 Mavis
1607 Mavis, provisional designation , is a stony asteroid from the central region of the asteroid belt, approximately 12 kilometers in diameter. It was discovered on 3 September 1950, by South African astronomer Ernest Johnson at Johannesburg Observatory in South Africa. It was later named after the wife of astronomer Jacobus Bruwer. Orbit and classification This asteroid orbits the Sun in the middle main-belt at a distance of 1.8–3.3  AU once every 4 years and 1 month (1,487 days). Its orbit has an eccentricity of 0.30 and an inclination of 9 ° with respect to the ecliptic. The asteroid's observation arc begins with its official discovery observations, as the two previous identifications, and , made at Heidelberg and Simeiz in 1903 and 1934, respectively, remained unused. Physical characteristics ''Mavis'' is a stony S-type asteroid. Rotation period In September 2007, Australian astronomers Collin Bembrick and Julian Oey independently obtained two rotationa ...
