Adrano
Adrano (, scn, Ddirnò), ancient ''Adranon'', is a town and in the Metropolitan City of Catania on the east coast of Sicily. It is situated around northwest of Catania, which was also the capital of the province to which Adrano belonged, now a metropolitan city. It lies near the foot of Mount Etna, at the confluence of the Simeto and Salso rivers. It is the commercial center for a region where olives and citrus fruit are grown. Neighbouring towns include: Biancavilla, Bronte, Paternò, Randazzo, Santa Maria di Licodia and Centuripe. History Founding and pre-Christian era The settlement was founded by Dionysius the Elder around 400 BC, intending to strengthen Syracusan power in the region. Adranon
Adranon ( grc, Ἀδρανόν) or Adranos ( grc, Ἀδρανός, links=no), present day Adrano, was an ancient polis on the southwestern slopes of Mount Etna, near Simeto River. It was known for the "simetite" variety of amber. The ancient city was founded by the ancient Greek ruler Dionysius I of Syracuse around 400 BC upon a pre-Hellenic neolithic settlement, near a temple dedicated to the god Adranus, worshiped throughout Sicily. Adranus was associated with volcanoes and equated eventually with Hephaestus. The city was conquered by Timoleon at 343-342 BC and subjugated to Rome in 263 BC. Adranus
Adranus or Adranos (Greek: ) was a fire god worshipped by the Sicels, an ancient population of the island of Sicily. His worship occurred all over the island, but particularly in the town of Adranus, modern Adrano, near Mount Etna. According to Aelian, about a thousand sacred dogs were kept near his temple in this town. Adranus was said to have lived under Mount Etna before being driven out by the Greek god Hephaestus, or Vulcan. According to Hesychius, Adranus was the father of the Palici, born to Adranus' lover, the nymph Thalia. Paternò ( scn, Patennò) is a southern Italian town and ''comune'' of the Metropolitan City of Catania, Sicily. With a population (2016) of 48,009, it is the third municipality of the province after Catania and Acireale. Geography Paternò borders with the municipalities of Belpasso, Biancavilla, Catenanuova ( EN), Centuripe (EN), Ragalna, Ramacca and Santa Maria di Licodia.
