Lady Harriet Acland
Lady Harriet Acland (née Fox-Strangways; 3 January 175021 July 1815) was a British noblewoman and diarist. She accompanied her husband to British North America and became celebrated for her personal courage. She is commemorated on one of the bronze reliefs on second floor of the Saratoga Monument in the State of New York. Early life She began life as The Honourable Christian Henrietta Caroline "Harriet" Fox-Strangways, daughter of Stephen Fox-Strangways (then Baron Ilchester), and his wife, the former Elizabeth Horner. When her father was raised to his earldom, Harriet became "Lady Harriet Fox-Strangways". Marriage and issue In 1770, at the age of twenty, she married John Dyke Acland, son of Sir Thomas Dyke Acland, 7th Baronet, and his wife, Elizabeth Dyke. Sarah Angelina ("Angie") Acland (26 June 1849 – 2 December 1930) was an English amateur photographer, known for her portraiture and as a pioneer of colour photography. Distributed bThe University of Chicago Pressin the US. She was credited by her contemporaries with inaugurating colour photography "as a process for the travelling amateur", by virtue of the photographs she took during two visits to Gibraltar in 1903 and 1904. Richard Acland (bishop)
Richard Dyke Acland (3 October 1881 – 4 January 1954) was a British soldier and, later, an Anglican bishop. He was the son of the Reverend Henry Dyke Acland, grandson of Sir Thomas Dyke Acland, 10th Baronet, and his wife Adelaide Clementina Hart Davis, daughter of Richard Vaughan Davis. Dyke Acland was educated at Bedford School and at Keble College, Oxford and graduated with a Master of Arts. He served in the 1st Volunteer Battalion, Oxfordshire Light Infantry and reached the rank of captain. In 1905, Acland was appointed curate of St Mary, Slough and held this post until 1911. He became a missionary for the Society for the Propagation of the Gospel in the following year in Ahmednagar, India. He was the society's secretary between 1925 and 1929, and served as Bishop of Bombay until 1947. In the latter year, he was decorated with the Kaisar-i-Hind Gold Medal. Sir Reginald Brodie Dyke Acland (18 May 1856 – 18 February 1924) was a British barrister and judge. Background He was the sixth son of Sir Henry Wentworth Acland, 1st Baronet, and his wife Sarah Cotton, eldest daughter of William Cotton. His younger brother was Alfred Dyke Acland. He was educated at Winchester College and then at University College, Oxford, where he graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in 1878 and Master of Arts five year later. Career In 1881, Acland was called to the bar by the Inner Temple and worked as barrister-at-law. He became junior counsel to the Admiralty in 1897 and subsequently was appointed Judge Advocate of the Fleet in 1904. Major-General Sir John Hugh Bevil Acland, KCB, CBE, DL (26 November 1928 – 17 November 2006) was a senior British Army officer. Early life Acland was born on 26 November 1928, the elder son of Peter Acland and Bridget Susan Acland (née Barnett). His younger brother Antony went on to become head of Her Majesty's Diplomatic Service and British Ambassador in Washington. He was educated at Eton College. The Oxford University Society of Change Ringers, founded in 1872, is the official society dedicated to change ringing in Oxford University. Its objects are to promote the art of change ringing in the university and to ring for Sunday services in Oxford during full term. History The society was founded by John Edward Troyte (1848–1932, né Acland) on 2 February 1872, making it the oldest university society dedicated to change ringing. In the early years, the majority of its members were training as clergy or from clerical families. The first peal for the society (Stedman Triples at Drayton) was rung on the 10th anniversary of the foundation. In 1887, the society lapsed, with three brief revivals in 1890, 1892 and 1902, until it was revived in 1920 by Harry Miles and has been in continuous existence ever since.
