ABC Local Radio
ABC Local Radio is a network of publicly owned radio stations in Australia, operated by the Australian Broadcasting Corporation. ABC Local Radio stations broadcast across the continent using terrestrial transmitters and satellites. Its programming consists of news, current affairs, talkback, entertainment, sport, music and local affairs. They are usually reckoned as the flagship ABC radio stations in their areas. Depending on the time of day and the day of the week, programming can either be purely local (typically on weekday mornings), broadcast from the state or territory capital city ABC station, or simulcast across all ABC Local Radio services across the country (typically overnight, public holidays, in the summer months and on weekends). ABC Radio Brisbane (callsign: 4QR) is an ABC Local Radio station in Brisbane, Queensland. It is one of the largest stations in the network, serving as a base for Queensland programming - many programs are broadcast across the ABC Local Radio network in regional and rural areas of Queensland when those stations are not carrying local programming. General history Radio broadcasting began in Brisbane in 1925 when the Government of Queensland commenced its own broadcasting operations with the callsign 4QG - 4 denoted the state of Queensland; QG stood for ''Queensland Government''. 4QG became a part of the ABC's radio network at its inception in 1932. ABC Newcastle
ABC Newcastle (call sign: 2NC) is an Australian radio station. It is the Newcastle, New South Wales, Newcastle station of the Australian Broadcasting Corporation, ABC local radio network, and is licensed to, and serving Newcastle and surrounding areas. It operates on the Amplitude modulation, AM band at 1233 kilohertz. ABC New England North West is an ABC Local Radio station based in Tamworth and broadcasting to the regions of New England, the Northern Tablelands and North West Slopes in New South Wales. This includes the towns and cities of Armidale, Moree, Tenterfield and Glen Innes. ABC Mid North Coast
ABC Mid North Coast is an ABC Local Radio station based in Port Macquarie and broadcasting to the Mid North Coast region in New South Wales. This includes the towns and cities of Grafton, Coffs Harbour, Kempsey and Taree. The station began as 2KP in 1954 originally as a relay of the national program. Studios were opened in Kempsey in 1956 but local news came from 2NR in Grafton until 1960 when the first locally produced bulletins began. The station relocated to new studios in Port Macquarie in 2004. ABC Mid North Coast is the originating station of ''Statewide Afternoons'', heard on most of the other ABC Local Radio stations in New South Wales. ABC Coffs Coast
ABC Coffs Coast is an ABC Local Radio station based in Coffs Harbour and broadcasting to the Coffs Coast region in New South Wales, Australia. History Originally part of ABC Mid North Coast, the ABC set up a bureau at 24 Gordon Street in Coffs Harbour in 1994, which then evolved into a broadcasting studio with a wide range of services. Due to high demand, the bureau decided to break off from the ABC Mid North Coast and become ABC Coffs Coast. The studio had to be rebuilt twice, both times due to floods, in November 1996 and April 2009. ABC Central Coast is an ABC Local Radio station based in Gosford and broadcasting to the Central Coast region in New South Wales. The transmission area of the station stretches from Woy Woy to The Entrance. The signal is notoriously weak in many valley areas of the region. The station official callsign is 2BL/T reflecting its function as an opt-out service of 702 ABC Sydney. The station commenced broadcasting in 2003 on the frequency of 92.5 FM. ABC Radio Darwin (call sign: 8DDD) is an ABC radio station which is located in Darwin, Northern Territory. It is one of the stations in the ABC Local Radio network and broadcasts on 105.7MHz on the FM dial. It is an Australian Government sponsored station and is run through the Australian Broadcasting Corporation. History In 1947, the ABC took over an old Army station, 5DR, and relaunched it as its first station in the Northern Territory. In the early days, its staffers lived in huts without air conditioning, and most programming was flown up on discs. Since there was only one newspaper in the area, 5DR frequently broadcast funeral arrangements because the Northern Territory's humid climate made it impossible to keep a body for any long period of time. ABC Radio Canberra
ABC Radio Canberra (call sign: 2CN) is an ABC Local Radio station based in Canberra and broadcasting to the Australian Capital Territory as well as surrounding areas in New South Wales – this includes the cities and towns of Queanbeyan, Yass, and Bungendore. The station began as 2CN in 1953 originally broadcasting on 1540 kHz and from 21 December 1974 at 1440 kHz. On 6 December 1983, it changed to its current AM frequency of 666 kHz.
