2024 American Athletic Conference Football Season
The 2024 American Athletic Conference football season is the 33rd NCAA Division I FBS Football season of the American Athletic Conference (The American). It will be the 12th season since the former Big East Conference dissolved and became the American Athletic Conference and the 10th season of the College Football Playoff in place. The American is considered a member of the Group of Five (G5) together with Conference USA, the MAC, Mountain West Conference and the Sun Belt Conference. The conference will have 14 football members for the 2024–25 season. Previous season During the 2023 American Athletic Conference season, Tulane and SMU posted 8–0 conference records and advanced to the Conference Championship Game. The NCAA Division I Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS), formerly known as Division I-A, is the highest level of college football in the United States. The FBS consists of the largest schools in the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA). As of 2022, there are 10 conferences and 131 schools in FBS. College football is one of the most popular spectator sports throughout much of the United States. The top schools generate tens of millions of dollars in yearly revenue. 2023 SMU Mustangs Football Team
The 2023 SMU Mustangs football team represented Southern Methodist University in the 2023 NCAA Division I FBS football season. The Mustangs played their home games at Gerald J. Ford Stadium in University Park, Texas, a separate city within the city limits of Dallas, and competed in the American Athletic Conference (The American). They were led by second-year head coach Rhett Lashlee. For the first time since 2019, the Mustanges won six conference games. The Mustangs finished the regular season going 8–0 in conference play to qualify for the AAC Championship Game, for the Mustangs' first appearance in a conference championship game since the 2010 CUSA Championship Game. Jon Sumrall
Jon Sumrall (born July 5, 1982) is an American college football coach. He is the head football coach at Troy University, a position he has held since the 2022 season. Coaching career Sumrall began his coaching career at his alma mater, Kentucky, after suffering a career-ending injury. After a couple of years, he coached at San Diego under former Kentucky assistant Ron Caragher. He was also the co-defensive coordinator at Tulane for three seasons before going to Troy as their assistant head coach and special teams coordinator. Sumrall was named the linebackers coach at Ole Miss in January 2018. He was also reported to be a finalist for the head coaching position at Troy before Chip Lindsey was hired. Brandon Slade Nagle (born March 23, 1980) is an American football coach who is currently the special teams and tight ends coach for the LSU Tigers football, LSU Tigers. He previously served as the interim head coach for the Tulane Green Wave football, Tulane Green Wave. Playing career A quarterback, Nagle played one game for the Clemson Tigers football, Clemson Tigers as a freshman, rushing for one yard on one carry. The Houston Cougars football program is an NCAA Division I FBS football team that represents the University of Houston. The team is commonly referred to as "Houston" or "UH" (spoken as "U of H"). Willie Fritz (born April 2, 1960) is an American football coach and former player. He is the head football coach at Tulane. Fritz served as the head football coach at University of Central Missouri from 1997 to 2009, Sam Houston State University from 2010 to 2013, and Georgia Southern University from 2014 to 2015. From 1993 to 1996, he was the head football coach at Blinn College, a junior college in Brenham, Texas, where he led his teams to consecutive NJCAA National Football Championships, in 1995 and 1996. National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Football Bowl Subdivision independent schools are four-year institutions whose football programs are not part of an NCAA-affiliated conference. The Army Black Knights football team, previously known as the Army Cadets, represents the United States Military Academy in college football.
