2023 In Chess
The main events in the 2023 chess calendar are the World Chess Championship 2023 and Women's World Chess Championship 2023. The top three finishers from the Chess World Cup 2023, the winner and runner-up of the FIDE Grand Swiss Tournament 2023 and the winner of the FIDE Circuit 2023 will qualify for the Candidates Tournament 2024. FIDE Circuit is the new path to qualify for the Candidates Tournament. One player who would achieve the highest results during 2023 in eligible tournaments gets the spot in the Candidates. The World Chess Championship 2023 is an upcoming chess match, taking place from 7 April to 30 April 2023 to determine the new world chess champion. Gukesh D
Dommaraju Gukesh (born 29 May 2006), better known as Gukesh D, is an Indian chess grandmaster. A chess prodigy, he is the third-youngest person in history to qualify for the title of Grandmaster, which FIDE awarded him in March 2019. On 16 October 2022, at the age of 16, he became the youngest player ever to defeat current world champion Magnus Carlsen, when he beat Carlsen in a game at the Aimchess Rapid Tournament. Early life Gukesh was born on 29 May 2006 in Chennai, Tamil Nadu. His father, Rajnikanth, is an ear, nose and throat surgeon, and his mother, Padma, is a microbiologist. Abhijeet Gupta
Abhijeet Gupta (born 16 October 1989) is an Indian chess player with the title of Grandmaster (GM). Gupta is the first player to win the Commonwealth Chess Championship five times. He has completed his early education from A's Steward Senior Secondary School, Bhilwara and then embarked-upon his career of being chess player. Chess career He achieved the norms required for the GM title at the Andorra Open 2006, New Delhi (Parswnath) 2007 and Balaguer 2007 tournaments. On 15 August 2008, he won the World Junior Chess Championship in Gaziantep, Turkey, ahead of many other strong players, including Maxim Rodshtein, David Howell and Hou Yifan. Nils Grandelius
Nils Axel Grandelius (born 3 June 1993 in Lund, Sweden) is a Swedish chess grandmaster. He is the top ranked player of Sweden. Chess career FIDE awarded him the titles FIDE Master, in 2007, International Master, in 2008, and Grandmaster in 2010. In 2008, Grandelius tied for second place, placing fourth on countback, in the Under 16 section of the European Youth Chess Championships. In the same year, he took clear first place in the Olomouc Open in Czech Republic with a score of 6½ points from 9 games; thanks to this result, he also achieved his first norm required for the title Grandmaster (GM). Reykjavik Open
The Reykjavik Open is an annual chess tournament that takes place in the capital city of Iceland. It was held every two years up to 2008, currently it runs annually. The first edition was held in 1964 and was won by Mikhail Tal with a score of 12.5 points out of 13. The tournament is currently played with the Swiss system, while from 1964 to 1980 and in 1992 it was a round-robin tournament. The 2013 edition was voted the second best open tournament of the year in the world by the Association of Chess Professionals, behind Gibraltar Chess Festival. Wesley Barbossa So (born October 9, 1993) is a Filipino and American chess grandmaster and 3-time U.S. Chess Champion (in 2017, 2020, and 2021). He is also a three-time Philippine Chess Champion. On the March 2017 FIDE rating list, he was ranked number two in the world and had an Elo rating of 2822, making him the fifth-highest rated player in history. American Cup (chess)
The American Cup is an annual invitational double-elimination chess tournament in St. Louis, Missouri, United States. Format The tournament is 8 player double elimination tournament, featuring 8 of the strongest players in the United States. The championship bracket is played with a time control of 90 minutes, with a 30 second increment throughout for 2 games. The elimination bracket is played with a time control of 25 minutes and a 10 second increment for 2 games. If needed two tiebreak games of 10 minutes with a 5 second increment are played followed by an Armageddon game if necessary.
