Chinese Civil War
The Chinese Civil War was fought between the Kuomintang-led government of the Republic of China and forces of the Chinese Communist Party, continuing intermittently since 1 August 1927 until 7 December 1949 with a Communist victory on mainland China. The war is generally divided into two phases with an interlude: from August 1927 to 1937, the KMT-CCP Alliance collapsed during the Northern Expedition, and the Nationalists controlled most of China. From 1937 to 1945, hostilities were mostly put on hold as the Second United Front fought the Japanese invasion of China with eventual help from the Allies of World War II, but even then co-operation between the KMT and CCP was minimal and armed clashes between them were common. Ting Chiang
Ting Chiang (; 26 April 1936 – 27 January 2023) was a Taiwanese actor. Ting was nominated for the Golden Bell Award for Best Leading Actor in a Miniseries or Television Film in 2001, 2007, and 2010, winning for his role in 2001's ''Remember, Forget''. Ting and his wife last appeared together in the 2021 television series '. Ting suffered from a fall at home, where he was recuperating from a minor stroke, and was sent to a hospital, where he died on 27 January 2023, at the age of 86. Shen Lyu-shun
Shen Lyu-shun (; 12 November 1949 – 6 January 2023) was a Taiwanese diplomat who served at posts in the United States and Europe. He also served in the Department of North American Affairs in the Taiwanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs. He was best known as serving as the representative of the Republic of China to the United States from 2014 to 2016. Early life Born on 12 November 1949 in Taipei, Taiwan, Shen was a sixth generation descendant of famous Qing dynasty official Shen Baozhen, and had other relatives who served in Taiwanese diplomatic posts in several countries, including Brazil, Japan, Iran, Niger and Rwanda. He obtained his bachelor's degree in law from National Chung Hsing University in 1972. National Chiao Tung University
National Chiao Tung University (NCTU; ) was a public research university located in Hsinchu, Taiwan. Established in 1896 as Nanyang Public School by an imperial edict of the Guangxu Emperor, it was one of China's leading universities. After the Chinese Civil War, NCTU was re-established by former Chiao Tung University faculty and alumni in Taiwan in 1958. NCTU was selected by Taiwan's Ministry of Educations as one of the seven national universities focused on research in 2002. Kuo Nan-hung (; 23 October 1936 – 1 January 2023) was a Taiwanese politician who served as Minister of Transportation and Communications from 1987 to 1990. Biography Originally an electronical engineer, Kuo Nan-hung became the President of the National Chiao Tung University in 1979 and served in that position until 1987, when he was appointed to the Executive Yuan under President of the Republic of China Chiang Ching-kuo. Pingtung County
Pingtung County is a county located in southern Taiwan. It has a warm tropical monsoon climate and is known for its agriculture and tourism. White Terror (Taiwan)
The White Terror () was the political repression of Taiwanese civilians under the Kuomintang (KMT)-ruled government. The period of White Terror is generally considered to have begun when martial law was declared in Taiwan on 19 May 1949, which was enabled by the 1948 Temporary Provisions against the Communist Rebellion, and ended on 21 September 1992 with the repeal of Article 100 of the Criminal Code, allowing for the prosecution of "anti-state" activities. The Temporary Provisions were repealed a year earlier on 22 April 1991 and martial law was lifted on 15 July 1987.
