South Korean Television
In South Korea, there are a number of national television networks, the three largest of which are KBS, MBC, and SBS. Most of the major television studios are located on Yeouido and Sangam-dong, Seoul. South Korea became the fourth adopter in Asia when television broadcasting began on 12 May 1956 with the opening of HLKZ-TV, a commercially operated television station. HLKZ-TV was established by the RCA Distribution Company (KORCAD) in Seoul with 186–192 MHz, 100-watt output, and 525 scanning lines. Important genres of television shows include serial dramas, historical dramas, variety shows, game shows, news programs, and documentaries. All three networks have produced increasingly lavish historical dramas in recent years. History Prior to ''Music Bank'', ''Top 10 Songs'' (가요톱10) debuted in 1981 airing live at 6:30 (KST) on Fridays and aired until 1998. ''Drama Stage'' () is a South Korean weekly television program that features ten one-act dramas, which is similar to KBS2's ''Drama Special''. The short plays were created by writers selected from the ''O'PEN Drama Storyteller Exhibition''. O'PEN writers were recruited through an open call between January and March 2017. A total of 3,700 aspiring writers applied for competition with scripts for dramas or films during the contest period of about two months. Dozen of various drama and film industry officials judged the script in two to three rounds. The jury finally selected 35 new writers, including 20 new drama writers and 15 new movie writers. held by CJ E&M, and these are adapted as one-act dramas produced by the former's subsidiary Studio Dragon in partnership with other companies.
