2023 European Athletics U23 Championships
The 2023 European Athletics U23 Championships were the 14th edition of the biennial athletics competition between European athletes under the age of twenty three. The event was organized by European Athletics Association and held from 13–16 July 2023 in Espoo, Finland. This was the third time that Finland staged European Athletics U23 Championships after previous editions Turku 1997 and Tampere 2013. European Athletics Association
The European Athletic Association (more commonly known as European Athletics) is the governing body for athletics in Europe. It is one of the six Area Associations of the world's athletics governing body World Athletics. European Athletics has 51 members and is headquartered in Lausanne. Originally created in 1932 as a European Committee, it was made into an independent body during the Bucharest conference of 1969. The first European Athletics congress took place in Paris on 6–8 October 1970, with Dutchman Adriaan Paulen elected as its first president. Lionel Spitz
Lionel Spitz (born 12 January 2001) is a Swiss sprinter who specialises in the 400 metres. He won a silver medal at the 2023 European U23 Championships. Shortly after, he set a new personal best of 45.25 at the Swiss Championships and also finished in first place at the event, securing his second national title. Early life and background Lionel Spitz was born on 12 January 2001 in Adliswil, a small tow in the canton of Zürich. He began his athletic career at a young age when he joined Adliswil Track Team in 2009. His mother, Lilly Spitz, is the chief coach of the club. He has an older brother, Linus, who runs for the club as well. Lionel remains with Adliswil Track Team, but his trainer is Alex Hautle from LAC TV Unterstrass in Zürich. Francesco Guerra (born 10 November 1942) is an Italian mathematical physicist, whose main research contributions are in quantum field theory and spin glasses. Career highlights Francesco Guerra received his degree from the University of Naples in 1964. He was Professor of Theoretical Physics in Sapienza Università di Roma since 1979. Rory Leonard
Rory Leonard (born 13 February 2001) is a British track and field athlete who competes as a Long distance running, long distance runner. In 2023, he won gold at the European U23 Athletics Championships over 10,000 metres. Early and personal life From Ampleforth, in Yorkshire, he attended The King Edward VI School, Morpeth. Leonard competed at the European Youth Olympics in 2018. From 2021, he attended Oklahoma State University where he studied English literature and philosophy. He runs for Morpeth Harriers. Will Barnicoat (born 24 March 2003) is a British track and field athlete and cross country runner. He was European U20 cross country champion in 2022, and became European U23 cross country champion in 2023. Early and personal life Barnicoat runs for Aldershot, Farnham and District Athletics Club. He attended Cranleigh School, and the University of Birmingham, where he was a contemporary of Axel Vang Christensen. As a student, Barnicoat supplemented his income working as a pot washer at a branch of Gourmet Burger Kitchen. Charles Hicks (born 25 July 2001) is a British middle- and long-distance runner. He is a two-time European Cross Country under-23 champion (2021, 2022), the first British male or female to repeat as Euro U23 winner. Hicks won the 2022 NCAA Division I Cross Country title. Career Born and raised in London, Charles Hicks moved with his family to Florida at age 12. He studies cognitive science at Stanford University. Samuel Pihlström
Samuel Pihlström (born 8 March 2001) is a Swedish middle-distance runner. He is a Swedish national champion and indoor record holder over 1500 metres. Career In June 2022 in Madrid at the World Athletics Continental Tour event, he won the men’s 1500m in a personal best time of 3:38.46.
