51st Pacific Islands Forum
The 51st Pacific Islands Forum was a meeting of the heads of state and heads of government of the Pacific Islands Forum (PIF), which was held in Suva, Fiji from 11 to 14 July 2022. The meeting was chaired by the Prime Minister of Fiji, Frank Banimarama. The meeting led up to the launch of the 2050 Strategy for the Blue Pacific Continent. Background The meeting was originally scheduled for 4–7 August 2020 but was postponed to 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, before it was further shifted to its current July 2022 date. A high-level political dialogue was held earlier on 7 June 2022 between several Pacific Island countries which addressed China's economic and security deal and the PIF leadership crisis. Work to reunite the Forum were to formally conclude during the meeting. 2022 Pacific Typhoon Season
The 2022 Pacific typhoon season was the third consecutive season to have below-average tropical cyclone activity, with twenty-five named storms, although it was more active than the previous seasons by named storm count. Ten became typhoons, and three of those intensified into super typhoons. This low activity was caused by an unusually strong La Niña that had persisted from 2020. The season's first named storm, Malakas, developed on April 6, while the last named storm, Pakhar, dissipated on December 12. The season's first typhoon, Malakas, reached typhoon status on April 12. The season ran throughout 2022, though most tropical cyclones typically develop between May and October. Tropical storms Megi and Nalgae were responsible for more than half of the casualties, while typhoons Hinnamnor and Nanmadol both caused $1 billion in damages. 2022–23 South Pacific Cyclone Season
The 2022–23 South Pacific cyclone season was an average tropical cyclone season within the South Pacific Ocean east of 160°E. The season officially started on November 1, 2022, and ended April 30, 2023, however a tropical cyclone could form at any time between July 1, 2022, and June 30, 2023, and would count towards the season total. During the season, tropical cyclones will be officially monitored by the Fiji Meteorological Service, Australian Bureau of Meteorology and New Zealand's MetService. The United States Armed Forces through the Joint Typhoon Warning Center (JTWC) will also monitor the basin and issue unofficial warnings for American interests. The FMS attaches a number and an F suffix to tropical disturbances that form in or move into the basin while the JTWC designates significant tropical cyclones with a number and a P suffix. Jai Ram Reddy
Jai Ram Reddy, CF (12 May 1937 – 29 August 2022) was an Indo-Fijian politician, who had a distinguished career in both the legislative and judicial branches of the Fijian government. In 1998, he received Fiji's highest honour, the Companion of the Order of Fiji, in recognition of his services to his country. As leader of the National Federation Party (NFP), he was Leader of the Official Opposition from 1977 to 1983, and again from 1992 to 1999. He went on to serve as President of the Fiji Court of Appeal. He held this post briefly in 2000, and again from 2002 to 2003. On 31 January 2003, the United Nations General Assembly elected him as a member of the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda, which is responsible for the prosecution of war crimes. Joeli Vidiri (23 November 1973 – 23 February 2022) was a professional rugby union footballer who played as a Wing (rugby union), wing. Born in Fiji, he earned seven caps for the Fiji national rugby union team, Fiji national team before switching his allegiance to New Zealand national rugby union team, New Zealand, for whom he earned two more caps. Career Vidiri studied at Queen Victoria School (Fiji). He represented Fiji Rugby Union, Fiji in both 15s and sevens before coming to New Zealand in 1994. Mosese Taga
Mosese Taga (17 September 1964 – 2 February 2022) was a Fijian rugby union player. Career He debuted with the Flying Fijians during the 1987 Rugby World Cup, during the match against New Zealand at Christchurch, on 27 May 1987. He was also part of the 1991 Rugby World Cup roster, where he was the captain. His last international cap was during a match against Australia, at Sydney on 18 September 1998. Military Of Fiji
The Republic of Fiji Military Forces (RFMF, formerly the Royal Fiji Military Forces) is the military force of the Pacific island nation of Fiji. With a total manpower of about 4,000 active soldiers and approximately 6,000 reservists, it is one of the smallest militaries in the world. The Ground Force is organised into six infantry and one engineer battalions.
