2021 European Floods
In July 2021, several European countries were affected by severe floods. Some were catastrophic, causing deaths and widespread damage. The floods started in the United Kingdom as flash floods causing some property damage and inconvenience. Later floods affected several river basins across Europe including Austria, Belgium, Croatia, Germany, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, and Switzerland. At least 243 people died in the floods, including 196 in Germany, 43 in Belgium, two in Romania, one in Italy and one in Austria. Belgian Minister of Home Affairs Annelies Verlinden described the events as "one of the greatest natural disasters our country has ever known." German minister-president Malu Dreyer of the Rhineland-Palatinate state called the floods "devastating". Wilhelm Knabe
Wilhelm Knabe (8 October 1923 – 30 January 2021) was a German ecologist, pacifist, civil servant and politician, remembered as a founding member of the Green Party in Germany, and a pioneer of conservation of the environment who shaped the party for decades. Knabe studied forest management in the German Democratic Republic (GDR) and, as an assistant at the Humboldt University, focused on the recultivation after brown coal mining. Knabe left East Germany in 1959, settling in Mülheim, West Germany with his family, where he worked for a state agency for ecology. He had been a member of the Christian Democratic Union of Germany (CDU) from 1946, because it represented his Christian ethics, but left the party in 1966, unwilling to support its belief in economic growth and nuclear energy. Siegfried & Roy were a duo of German-American magicians and entertainers, best known for their appearances with white lions and white tigers. It was composed of Siegfried Fischbacher (June 13, 1939 – January 13, 2021) and Roy Horn (born Uwe Ludwig Horn; October 3, 1944 – May 8, 2020). From February 1, 1990, until Horn's career-ending injury on his birthday on October 3, 2003, the duo formed ''Siegfried & Roy at the Mirage Resort and Casino'', which was regarded as the most-visited show in Las Vegas, Nevada. From August 2004 to May 2005, Fischbacher and Horn were executive producers of the animated sitcom ''Father of the Pride''. Early life Fischbacher and Horn were born and raised in Germany. Bernd Kannenberg
Bernd Kannenberg (20 August 1942 – 13 January 2021) was a West German race walker who won the 50 km event at the 1972 Summer Olympics. He also competed in the 20 km at the 1972 and 1976 Games, but failed to finish. In 1972 Kannenberg became the first German athlete to walk 50 km within four hours; the same year he was awarded the Silbernes Lorbeerblatt. During his career he set five world records, and won six outdoor and four indoor West German titles. Kannenberg was a professional soldier and trained at the sports school of the German Bundeswehr at Warendorf. After retiring from competitions, he coached the German race walking team. Kannenberg was born in Königsberg (Eastern Prussia, from 1945, Kaliningrad). Renate Lasker-Harpprecht
Renate Lasker-Harpprecht (14 January 1924 – 3 January 2021) was a German author and journalist. She survived the Holocaust, having been imprisoned at Auschwitz and Bergen-Belsen. Biography Lasker-Harpprecht was arrested on 5 June 1943 along with her sister, Anita, who was a member of the Women's Orchestra in Auschwitz. The two sisters survived and were interviewed by Patrick Gordon Walker on 15 April 1945 at Bergen-Belsen, which was one of the first interviews of a Holocaust survivor. The recording was lost but later found by Bayerischer Rundfunk in the German Broadcasting Archive. After she gained her freedom, Lasker-Harpprecht became an interpreter for the British Army for the remainder of World War II. She later worked in London for the BBC, as well as Westdeutscher Rundfunk in Cologne and ZDF in the United States. December 2021 Christian Democratic Union Of Germany Leadership Election
The December 2021 Christian Democratic Union leadership election was held in December 2021. The leader of the party was elected indirectly by a party convention, for the first time the CDU held a vote by the membership to decide the candidate which the party's executive board proposed to the party convention. Though the convention is not obliged to elect the proposed candidates, the membership vote is considered politically binding. The online vote of members was from 4 December to 16 December 2021 and the convention in Hanover on 21 and 22 January 2022 formalised the election. The election was triggered by the resignation of leader Armin Laschet in October 2021. Laschet was elected in January 2021 after the resignation of Annegret Kramp-Karrenbauer. 2021 Mecklenburg-Vorpommern State Election
The 2021 Mecklenburg-Vorpommern state election was held on 26 September 2021 to elect the 8th Landtag of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. The incumbent government is a coalition of the Social Democratic Party (SPD) and Christian Democratic Union (CDU) led by Minister President Manuela Schwesig. The SPD won a landslide plurality of almost 40% of votes, a nine percentage point increase from 2016. The opposition Alternative for Germany (AfD) remained the second largest party but declined to under 17%. The CDU recorded its worst ever result in the state with 13.3%, while The Left also declined to 10%. Alliance 90/The Greens and the Free Democratic Party (FDP) both won around 6% of votes and re-entered the Landtag after previously falling out in 2016 and 2011, respectively. After the election, the SPD chose to form a coalition with The Left rather than renew their government with the CDU.
