2021 Sudirman Cup
The 2021 Sudirman Cup (officially known as the TotalEnergies BWF Sudirman Cup Finals 2021 for sponsorship reasons) was the 17th edition of the Sudirman Cup, the biennial international badminton championship contested by the mixed national teams of the member associations of Badminton World Federation (BWF), since its inception in 1989. The tournament was played in Vantaa, Finland, between 26 September and 3 October 2021. China were the defending champions. They successfully defended their title, lifting the trophy for a record-extending 12th time. Host city selection Originally the Badminton World Federation awarded Suzhou, China to host the tournament back in November 2018, but due to the strict restrictions from the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, it was too hard to conduct tournaments in China in 2021. Energia Areena
Energia Areena is a multifunctional indoor arena in the Myyrmäki Sports Park, located in the Myyrmäki district of Vantaa, Finland. The arena gets its name from its largest sponsor, the energy company Vantaan Energia. Events The venue is able to be modified to accommodate corporate, cultural, and concert events, among others, but is best known for its athletic uses. Energia Areena is equipped to host floorball, badminton, volleyball, basketball, handball and futsal practices and games, in addition to gymnastics and cheerleading competitions. Badminton is a racquet sport played using racquets to hit a shuttlecock across a net. Although it may be played with larger teams, the most common forms of the game are "singles" (with one player per side) and "doubles" (with two players per side). 2021 Sudirman Cup Group Stage
The 2021 Sudirman Cup group stage was held at the Energia Areena in Vantaa, Finland, from 26 to 30 September 2021. The group stage was the first stage of the 2021 Sudirman Cup. During the group stage, only the 2 highest-placing teams in all 4 groups advanced to the knockout stage. Seeding The seedings for the 16 teams were released by BWF around June 2021. France and Australia originally were among the 16 teams but later on, withdrew from the competition. Thus, Finland was awarded a place as the host. New Zealand who originally have been given a place to replace Australia later on declined. The Russia national badminton team (russian: Сборная России по бадминтону) represents Russia in international badminton competitions. The team is organized by the National Badminton Federation of Russia (NBFR) located in Moscow. The NBFR became the sport's sole administrator when the Russian Badminton Federation (RBF) was dissolved by the Russian Olympic Committee (ROC) in 2005. In light of the 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine, Badminton World Federation (BWF) banned Russian athletes and officials from tournaments. The BWF World Ranking is the official ranking of the Badminton World Federation for badminton players who participate in tournaments sanctioned by Badminton World Federation. It is used to determine the qualification for the World Championships and Summer Olympic Games, as well as BWF World Tour tournaments. Seedings of draws at all BWF-sanctioned tournaments are conducted using the BWF World Ranking. Players under 19 years of age are eligible to rank in the BWF World Junior Ranking, which were introduced in January 2011.
