In Indonesia, the year was marked by the COVID-19 pandemic, which started in March when two people from Jakarta tested positive to the disease. The government responded to the outbreak by enacting large-scale social restrictions (PSBB) throughout much of Indonesia, opting against imposing lockdowns because of economic reasons. The pandemic put the Indonesian economy into recession, the country's first in nearly two decades, with the rupiah free-falling. Multiple international events that were to have been hosted in Indonesia had to be cancelled because of the pandemic. Students and workers Indonesia omnibus law protests, protested in October against the government's controversial Omnibus Law, resulting in more than 5,000 arrests. COVID-19 Pandemic
The COVID-19 pandemic, also known as the coronavirus pandemic, is an ongoing global pandemic of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). The novel virus was first identified in an outbreak in the Chinese city of Wuhan in December 2019. Attempts to contain it there failed, allowing the virus to spread to other areas of Asia and later worldwide.
