2017–18 WNBL Season
The 2017–18 WNBL season was the 38th season of the competition since its establishment in 1981. The regular season began on 5 October 2017, with the Melbourne Boomers visiting the Dandenong Rangers. The Sydney Uni Flames were the defending champions but were defeated in the semi-finals by Townsville. The Townsville Fire took home their third WNBL championship after defeating Melbourne, 2–0. This season sees the return to television, with Fox Sports broadcasting the WNBL for the first time since 2015. Spalding once again provided equipment including the official game ball, whilst iAthletic took over supplying team apparel. The Women's National Basketball League (WNBL) is a professional women's basketball list of basketball leagues, league in Australia composed of eight teams. The league was founded in 1981 and is the Women's sports, women's counterpart to the National Basketball League (Australia), National Basketball League (NBL). History Founding of the WNBL In August 1980, West Adelaide Bearcat Coach Ted Owens (basketball), Ted Powell, after an encouraging exchange of letters with St Kilda'Coach Bill Palmer called a meeting at the Governor Hindmarsh Hotel in Adelaide. In attendance were Ted, North Adelaide Coach Kay McFarlane and Noarlunga Coach Brendan Flynn. At this meeting it was decided to approach three Victorian teams (St Kilda, CYMS and Nunawading) with the idea of forming a home and away Interstate Competition. Adelaide Lightning
The Adelaide Lightning are an Australian professional basketball team competing in the Women's National Basketball League (WNBL). The club is based in the city of Adelaide, South Australia, and will play their home games at the State Basketball Centre in Wayville, South Australia, Wayville from the 2025–26 season. Carley Mijović
Carley Monika Ernst (; born 1 August 1994) is an Australian professional basketball player. Career Ernst began her professional career in 2009 when she joined the Australian Institute of Sport (AIS) for the 2009–10 WNBL season. She managed just four games in her first season and went on to sit out the entire 2010–11 season after undergoing a second knee operation. She returned to the AIS line-up in 2011–12 and played out her first full season. She subsequently earned WNBL Rookie of the Year honours after averaging 9.1 points and 5.2 rebounds in 18 games. In May 2012, Ernst signed with the Dandenong Rangers for the 2012–13 WNBL season. In 23 games for Dandenong, she averaged 6.1 points and 3.5 rebounds per game. Sara Blicavs
Sara Blicavs (; born 15 February 1993) is an Australian professional basketball player. She played 15 seasons in the Women's National Basketball League between 2009 and 2024. Career Blicavs plays in the guard or forward positions. WNBL Blicavs began her career, playing for the Australian Institute of Sport. After a brief stint with the Dandenong Rangers, Blicavs moved to the Bendigo Spirit. There, she won her first WNBL championship. Colleen Planeta (born September 3, 1988) is an American professional basketball player. Career College Planeta played college basketball at Point Loma Nazarene University for the Point Loma Sea Lions in San Diego, California. Europe Since leaving college, Planeta played in several different leagues across Europe. Lee played in nations such as Portugal, Greece, Germany and Luxembourg. Katie-Rae Ebzery (born 8 January 1990), also known as Katie Ebzery, is an Australian former professional basketball player who played 15 seasons in the Women's National Basketball League (WNBL). She was a three-time All-WNBL First Team member and a two-time Olympian with the Australian Opals. Early life Ebzery was born in Newcastle, New South Wales, in the suburb of Waratah. Bendigo Spirit
The Bendigo Spirit are an Australian professional basketball team based in Bendigo, Victoria. The Spirit play in the Women's National Basketball League (WNBL) and play their home games at Bendigo Stadium, Red Energy Arena. The team debuted in the WNBL in 2007. Nadeen Payne
Nadeen Payne (born 7 June 1993) is an Australian professional basketball player. She currently plays for the Townsville Fire in the WNBL. Career WNBL Payne began her WNBL career with the Australian Institute of Sport. She would then return home and play for her home side, Townsville Fire. This was followed by two seasons with the Adelaide Lightning. After a year away from the game, Payne returned with the new look South East Queensland Stars. Nicole Seekamp (born 26 April 1992) is an Australian professional basketball player. College Seekamp played college basketball at the University of South Dakota in Vermillion, South Dakota for the Coyotes. Jordan Renee Hooper (born February 20, 1992) is an American basketball player. She last played for the Atlanta Dream of the Women's National Basketball Association (WNBA). She was an All-American forward at the college level for the University of Nebraska. High school Hooper grew up on a ranch outside Alliance, Nebraska.
