The year 2016 was the 45th year after the independence of Bangladesh. It was also the third year of the third term of the Government of Sheikh Hasina. A storm surge up to 7 ft (2.0 m) above the astronomical tide hit the coast of Bangladesh at afternoon. The cyclone approached the land over the coast at Sandwip, Hatia, Kutubdia, Sitakundu and Feni. 30 people died when Roanu hit the county, most of them died when the cyclone's storm surge overtopped dams. Around 40,000 homesteads and business houses were damaged. The storm disrupted electricity supply and road communications in the areas. Food storage, seasonal crops were damaged. Murder Of Sohagi Jahan Tonu
Murder of Sohagi Jahan Tonu refers to the gang rape and murder of Sohagi Jahan Tonu, a Bangladeshi student, by unknown person(s). History Tonu was a 19-year-old student of Comilla Victoria College. Her father was an employee of Comilla Cantonment board. Her dead body was found on 20 March 2016 in Comilla Cantonment. She had gone to study at a private tutors when she disappeared. Investigation Tonu's father Lalu, also known as Kalu, filed a murder case with Kotwali Model Police Station in Comilla against persons unknown. The police transferred the case to Detective Branch. The case was handed out to the Criminal Investigation Department on 1 April 2016. The first autopsy found no evidence of rape or murder, which was released on 4 April 2016. 2016 True Aviation An-26 Crash
On 9 March 2016, True Aviation Flight 21, an Antonov An-26 transport aircraft operated by True Aviation crashed 500 metres from Cox's Bazar Airport in Bangladesh, from where it had taken off shortly before. The twin-engine plane was attempting to return to the airport after experiencing an engine failure. Three of the four crew members on board were killed in the accident. Background The flight was managed by True Blue Aviation. The member of Parliament from Cox's Bazar and member of Awami League Ashek Ullah Rafique is one of the owners of the aviation company. Bangladesh Bank Money Laundering Case
The Bangladesh Bank robbery, also known colloquially as the Bangladesh Bank cyber heist, was a theft that took place in February 2016. Thirty-five fraudulent instructions were issued by security hackers via the SWIFT network to illegally transfer close to US$1 billion from the Federal Reserve Bank of New York account belonging to Bangladesh Bank, the central bank of Bangladesh. Five of the thirty-five fraudulent instructions were successful in transferring US$101 million, with US$20 million traced to Sri Lanka and US$81 million to the Philippines. The Federal Reserve Bank of New York blocked the remaining thirty transactions, amounting to US$850 million, due to suspicions raised by a misspelled instruction.
