2014 International German Open
The 2014 International German Open (also known as the bet–at–home Open – German Tennis Championships 2014 for sponsorship reasons) was a men's tennis tournament played on Clay court, outdoor red clay courts. It was the 108th edition of the event known that year as the International German Open and was part of the ATP World Tour 500 series of the 2014 ATP World Tour. It took place at the Am Rothenbaum in Hamburg, Germany, from 14 July through 20 July 2014. Unseeded Leonardo Mayer won the singles title. Clay Court
A clay court is one of the types of tennis court on which the sport of tennis, originally known as "lawn tennis", is played. Clay courts are made of crushed stone, brick, shale, or other unbound mineral aggregate depending on the tournament. The French Open uses clay courts, the only Grand Slam tournament to do so. Clay courts are more common in Continental Europe and Latin America than in North America, Asia-Pacific or Britain. Two main types exist: red clay, the more common variety, and green clay, also known as "rubico", which is a harder surface. Although less expensive to construct than other types of tennis courts, the maintenance costs of clay are high as the surface must be rolled to preserve flatness. Philipp Eberhard Hermann Kohlschreiber (; born 16 October 1983) is a German former professional tennis player. The right-hander won eight singles and seven doubles titles on the ATP World Tour and made the quarterfinals at the 2012 Wimbledon Championships. Julian Reister (; born 2 April 1986) is a German retired professional tennis player. His career-high singles ranking is world No. 83, achieved in November 2013. Reister reached the quarterfinals of Buenos Aires in 2013 as a qualifier. Tobias Kamke
Tobias Kamke (born 21 May 1986) is a German former professional tennis player. He was ranked as high as world No. 64 in singles by the Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP), which he first achieved in January 2011. In 2010, Kamke was awarded Newcomer of the Year by the ATP after slashing his singles ranking from No. 254 to No. 67 by year-end following four finals on the ATP Challenger Tour, having beaten emerging players Milos Raonic and Ryan Harrison in two of the finals for the titles, and a third round appearance at the Wimbledon Championships, his career-best performance at a major. A wild card (also wildcard or wild-card and also known as an at-large berth or at-large bid) is a tournament or playoff berth awarded to an individual or team that fails to qualify in the normal way; for example, by having a high ranking or winning a qualifying stage.
