Nicolae Popescu
Nicolae Popescu (; 22 September 1937 – 29 July 2010) was a Romanian mathematician and professor at the University of Bucharest. He also held a research position at the Institute of Mathematics of the Romanian Academy, and was elected corresponding Member of the Romanian Academy in 1997. He is best known for his contributions to algebra and the theory of abelian categories. From 1964 to 2007 he collaborated with Pierre Gabriel on the characterization of abelian categories; their best-known result is the Gabriel–Popescu theorem, published in 1964. His areas of expertise were category theory, abelian categories with applications to rings and modules, adjoint functors, limits and colimits, the theory of sheaves, the theory of rings, fields and polynomials, and valuation theory. Magdalena-Anca Mircea (14 July 1967 – 14 July 2010), better known by her stage name Mădălina Manole, was a Romanian pop recording artist. Early life Magdalena-Anca Manole was born in a mountain region in the town of Vălenii de Munte of Prahova County. Her parents were Ion and Eugenia Manole. Her upbringing in a spiritual family led her to develop a passion for music. She was inspired to be a singer by her mother, who sang folk music. As a child, Magdalena-Anca was eager to learn the guitar, and so began taking lessons from Ana Ionescu Tetelea, a folk singer from Ploieşti. At age fifteen she became a member of the Cenacle Youth of Prahova, which was led at that time by the poet Lucian Avramescu. Simion Stanciu
Simion Stanciu (23 December 1949 - 6 July 2010), also known by his stage-name Syrinx, was a Romanian Pan flute player and composer, who lived and worked in Switzerland. Simion Stanciu was born in Bucharest, Romania, into a musical family. His father was a cellist, and his brothers were also instrumentalists. He registered at the Bucharest conservatory, initially studying the violin, but from 14 years of age onwards, he increasingly concentrated on playing the pan pipes. Due to his education in classical music, he was able to make a new repertory accessible for this instrument, which hitherto was only significant in the folk music traditions of various countries and in popular music. He chose his stage name, which not only signifies the nymph Syrinx in ancient Greek mythology, but also the Pan flute itself. Avigdor Arikha
Avigdor Arikha ( he, אביגדור אריכא; April 28, 1929 – April 29, 2010) was a Romanian-born French–Israeli artist, printmaker and art historian. Biography Victor Długacz (later Avigdor Arikha) was born to German-speaking Jewish parents in Rădăuţi, but grew up in Czernowitz in Bukovina, Romania (now in Ukraine). His father was an accountant. In 1941, the family was forcibly deported to the Romanian-run concentration camps of Transnistria, where his father was beaten to death. Arikha survived thanks to the drawings he made of deportation scenes, which were shown to delegates of the International Red Cross. Arikha immigrated to Mandatory Palestine in 1944, together with his sister. Until 1948, he lived in Kibbutz Ma'ale HaHamisha. In 1948 he was severely wounded in 1948 Arab–Israeli War. Fotbal Club Rapid 1923, commonly known as Rapid București () or simply as Rapid, is a Romanian professional football club based in Bucharest, which competes in the Liga I. It was founded in 1923 by employees of the Grivița workshops as ''Asociația Culturală și Sportivă CFR'' ("CFR Cultural and Sports Association"). Domestically, Rapid București is one of the most successful clubs in the country, having won three national titles, 13 Cupa României and four Supercupa României. Alexandru "Sandu" Neagu (19 July 1948 – 17 April 2010) was a Romanian footballer who played as a striker. Club career Alexandru Neagu, nicknamed '' Cappellini from Giulești'' by journalist Ioan Chirilă was born on 19 July 1948 in the Rahova neighborhood from Bucharest, but grew up in the Giulești neighborhood. He started playing football for the junior squads of Giulești based club, Rapid București, this being the team for which he would play all of his career, making his Divizia A debut under coach Valentin Stănescu on 31 March 1966 in a 1–0 away loss against Petrolul Ploiești and in the next season he won the competition, Stănescu using him in only 8 games in which he scored one goal, as the first options for the offence were Ion Ionescu and Emil Dumitriu. Ștefan Gheorghiu (violinist)
Ştefan Gheorghiu (March 23, 1926 – March 17, 2010) was a Romanian musician, violinist and teacher, born in Galați, Romania. At 5 he starts studying the violin and at 9 becomes student of the Royal Music Academy in Bucharest. George Enescu recommended him and his brother Valentin Gheorghiu - pianist, for a scholarship at the Conservatoire de Paris, where he studied the violin with Maurice Hewitt and musical harmony and counterpoint with Noel Gallon. During the war he continued studies in Bucharest with Garabet Avakian and Mihail Jora. Gheorghiu finished his studies in Moscow, attending the violin performing art masterclasses of David Oistrakh. Since 1946 he was appointed concert-soloist of the State Philharmonic in Bucharest, where he performed both in symphonic concerts and in violin recitals.
