General elections were held in the Netherlands Antilles on 22 January 2010. Voters elected the 22 members of the Estates, or parliament, of the Netherlands Antilles. It has been the country's last general election, as the Netherlands Antilles have ceased to exist as a country within the Kingdom of the Netherlands on 10 October 2010. At the time of the elections, the Netherlands Antilles consisted of the Caribbean islands of Bonaire, Curaçao, Saba, Sint Eustatius and Sint Maarten. Background The Council of Ministers of the Netherlands Antilles announced on 16 September 2009, that it had chosen 22 January 2010 as the official date for the upcoming general election. Voter registration for the election ended in November 2009. Antillean political parties who wish to contest the election must submit their list of candidates by the first week of December 2009. The Parliament of the Netherlands Antilles (; ), also translated as the Estates of the Netherlands Antilles, was the parliament of the Netherlands Antilles. 2010 Curaçao General Election
Island Council elections were held in Curaçao on 27 August 2010. Early elections were necessary because the island council failed to approve a proposed new constitution with a two-thirds majority in the first reading. Before it could be adopted by a simple majority in the second reading, the Charter for the Kingdom of the Netherlands specified that a general election had to be held. Although the elections were held for the island council of Curaçao, its newly elected members automatically became members of the Parliament of Curaçao when Curaçao became a constituent country within the Kingdom of the Netherlands on 10 October 2010. Results Although the Party for the Restructured Antilles increased its number of seats from 7 to 8, the coalition it led lost its majority. Gerrit Schotte of the Movementu Futuro Korsou (MFK) formed a coalition with Movishon Antia Nobo (MAN) and Pueblo Soberano (PS) and thus became Curaçao's first Prime Minister on 10 October 2010. The Parliament of Curaçao ( pap, Parlamento di Kòrsou, nl, Staten van Curaçao) consist of 21 members, each elected for a four-year term in a general election. Curaçao president of parliament is Charetti America-Francisca. The first Parliament was installed on 10 October 2010, following the dissolution of the Netherlands Antilles, and consisted of the members of the island council elected on 27 August 2010. The first Speaker of the Parliament was Ivar Asjes (Pueblo Soberano), while Amerigo Thodé ( Movementu Futuro Korsou) was the Deputy Speaker. The incumbent Speaker of Parliament is Charetti America-Francisca. Speakers 2021 general election Building The parliament is housed in the Statengebouw on the Julianaplein in Punda. The building has 21 steps representing the 21 seats. Between 2010 and 2014, the parliament met in the building of the Island Council on Ansinghstraat, because the building was being renovated. 2010 Sint Maarten General Election
Early general elections were held in Sint Maarten on 17 September 2010 to elect the 15 members of the Island Council. The National Alliance led by William Marlin emerged as the largest party, winning 7 of the 15 seats. However, a coalition government was formed by the Democratic Party and the United People's Party. Despite only having won two seats, the Democratic Party's Sarah Wescot-Williams became Prime Minister.
