200 Metres At The World Athletics Championships
The 200 metres at the World Championships in Athletics has been contested by both men and women since the inaugural edition in 1983. It is the second most prestigious title in the discipline after the 200 metres at the Olympics. The competition format typically has two or three qualifying rounds leading to a final between eight athletes. The championship records for the event are 19.19 seconds for men, set by Usain Bolt in 2009, and 21.45 seconds for women, set by Shericka Jackson in 2022. The men's world record has been broken at the competition on one occasion, and Bolt's championship record set in 2009 remains the world record as of 2015. The women's world record has never been broken at the competition. Anastasiya Alexandrovna Kapachinskaya (russian: Анастасия Александровна Капачинская; born November 20, 1979) is a Russian former sprint athlete. She was the 2003 World champion in the 200 m. She was disqualified from competitions in 2004 and 2008 due to doping offences. As a result, the bulk of her athletics performances after 2004 have been annulled. Career Kapachinskaya won the women's 200 m at the 2003 World Championships in Athletics in Paris. The following year, she was initially awarded gold in the 200 m event at the 2004 IAAF World Indoor Championships in Budapest but was stripped of the title after testing positive for the banned anabolic steroid stanozolol. She denied all knowledge of how it had happened, and during her two-year ban she vowed to work with the World Anti-Doping Agency to promote sports without drugs. Zhanna Pintusevich-Block ( uk, Жанна Пінтусевич-Блок; Tarnopolskaya; born 6 July 1972) is a Ukrainian former world champion sprinter who competed in the Olympic Games. Early life Zhanna Pintusevich-Block comes from a Jewish family. She was born in Nizhyn, Soviet Union and raised by her mother after her father left when she was three. Ramon Clay
Ramon Clay (born June 29, 1975) is a retired American sprinter who specialized in the 200 metres. He was born in Memphis, Tennessee. As a senior at Nashville's Hunters Lane High School, despite having the flu during the State Championships, Clay was the champion in the 100, 200, and 400 meters. His personal bests in high school were hand timed at 10.2 in the 100m, 20.9 in the 200m, and 46.4 in the 400m, before the State used automatic timing. His best 200 and 400 times were recorded a mere 20 minutes apart at the Banner Relays in Nashville. He attended Norfolk State University. At the 1996 Olympic Trials, he just missed representing the USA at the 1996 Olympics in the 200 meters, finishing 4th in a race where a world record time (19.66 seconds) was set by Michael Johnson. Christophe Cheval (born 25 February 1971 in Somain, Nord) is a French sprinter who specialized in the 200 metres. Debbie Ferguson-McKenzie (born 16 January 1976) is a former Bahamian sprint athlete who specialised in the 100 and 200 metres. Ferguson-McKenzie participated in five Olympics. Kelli White (born April 1, 1977, in Oakland, California) is an American former sprinter. She won two gold medals in the World Championships in Paris in 2003. However, on June 18, 2004, she was stripped of her medals, because she tested positive on a drug test. She retired from professional track in 2006. Early life and education White's parents had both been sprinters. Her mother, Debbie Byfield, competed at the 1972 Summer Olympics. She attended James Logan High School in Union City, California, where she was on the track team. The 8th World Championships in Athletics, under the auspices of the International Association of Athletics Federations, were held at Commonwealth Stadium in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada between 3 August and 12 August and was the first time the event had visited North America. The music for the Opening and Closing Ceremonies was composed by Canadian composers Jan Randall and Cassius Khan. The ceremonies also featured a 1000 voice choir, and the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra.
