Lech Kaczyński
Lech Aleksander Kaczyński (; 18 June 194910 April 2010) was a Polish politician who served as the city mayor of Warsaw from 2002 until 2005, and as President of Poland from 2005 until his death in 2010. Before his tenure as president, he previously served as President of the Supreme Audit Office from 1992 to 1995 and later Minister of Justice and Public Prosecutor General in Jerzy Buzek's cabinet from 2000 until his dismissal in July 2001. Born in Warsaw, he starred in a 1962 Polish film, '' The Two Who Stole the Moon'', with his identical twin brother Jarosław. Kaczyński was a graduate of law and administration of Warsaw University. In 1980, he was awarded his Ph.D. by Gdańsk University. In 1990, he completed his habilitation in labour and employment law. He later assumed professorial positions at Gdańsk University and Cardinal Stefan Wyszyński University in Warsaw. Mirosławiec (german: Märkisch Friedland; csb, Frédlądk) is a town in Wałcz County, West Pomeranian Voivodeship, Poland, with 4,837 inhabitants (2007). Antoni Heda
Antoni Heda (11 October 1916 – 15 February 2008) was a Polish military commander and a notable veteran of the Polish resistance movement in World War II and later independence movement against Soviet occupation following the war. Among the best known of his partisan actions was the raid on Communist prison in Kielce in August 1945, in which roughly 300 political prisoners were freed. His codename was "Szary" (Grey). Early life and activities at the beginning of the Second World War Antoni Heda was born in 1916 in the village of Małomierzyce near Iłża to a local peasant family. After graduating from a local primary school he moved to Radom, where he finished a Technical School and started a job in Starachowice Arms Works. Drafted into the Polish Army in 1937, he was dispatched to the Reserve Officer School (Szkoła Podchorążych Rezerwy). Krystyna Kersten (penname, Jan Bujnowski; born May 25, 1931 in Poznań – July 10, 2008 in Warsaw) was a Polish historian and a professor at the Historical Institute of the Polish Academy of Sciences. Fellow of Collegium Invisibile. Born in Poznań May 25, 1931 as Krystyna Goławska, she graduated from the faculty of history of the Warsaw University. Her main field of study was the history of Poland after 1944, and especially the first period of communist rule following the World War II. She published numerous works, some of them outside censorship (under pen-name "Jan Bujnowski"). She married Adam Kersten Adam Kersten (26 April 1930 in Kutno - 11 January 1983 in Warsaw) was a Polish historian, expert on the Polish history in the 17th century. 2008 Poland Tornado Outbreak
A tornado outbreak struck southern and central Poland on 15 August 2008. Overall, it killed four people. Tornadoes affected Opole Voivodeship, Silesian Voivodeship and Łódź Voivodeship. The European Storm Forecast Experiment issued a Level 3 which means there could potentially be a major severe thunderstorm outbreak. __TOC__ Tornado outbreak Multiple supercells formed in southern Poland on the afternoon of August 15, 2008 and produced several significant tornadoes that resulted in many casualties and significant damage. The main tornado-producer was a long-tracked right moving supercell with a BWER and a hook echo visible on radar which formed in southern Poland and moved north-northeastward, spawning several strong tornadoes. Cyclone Emma (2008)
Cyclone Emma was an extratropical cyclone that passed through several mainly Central European countries, on Saturday March 1, 2008, killing at least twelve people in Austria, Germany, Poland and the Czech Republic. Wind speeds reached up to in Austria and the Czech Republic. Major infrastructure disruptions and some injuries were also reported in Belgium, France, Switzerland, and the Netherlands. A Lufthansa jet almost crashed attempting to land in crosswinds at Hamburg. Meteorological context On 28 February 2008, a low-pressure area formed near Newfoundland. The pressure in its center was around at the time of formation. Within a few hours, the depression had strengthened a lot, and had deepened to near the Faroe Islands. EADS CASA C-295
The CASA C-295 (now Airbus C295) is a medium tactical transport aircraft that was designed and initially manufactured by the Spanish aerospace company CASA. Work on what would become the C-295 was started during the 1990s as a derivative of the successful CASA/IPTN CN-235 transport aircraft. On 28 November 1997, the prototype performed its maiden flight; quantity production commenced shortly thereafter. In April 1999, the Spanish Air Force became its launch customer with an order for nine military-configured C-295s; two years later, the type was declared operational with the service. Further orders for the C-295 would promptly follow. Following the incorporation of CASA into the pan-European aeronautical group EADS in 2000, it was redesignated as the EADS CASA C-295.
