2008 Belizean General Election
General elections were held in Belize on 7 February 2008. Beginning with this election, Belizeans elected 31 members to the House of Representatives of Belize instead of 29. In what was considered an upset, the opposition United Democratic Party (UDP) won the election with 25 out of 31 seats; the ruling People's United Party won six. The elections were held alongside a constitutional referendum had also been called to determine the views of Belizeans on an elected Senate. Background In August 2003 Cayo South Area Rep. Agripino Cawich of the PUP died, triggering a by-election in the constituency, only the second held in Belize since independence. The by-election was won by the UDP's John Saldivar, who had lost to Cawich in the general election earlier in 2003. The Al-Falah Mosque is a mosque in Belize City, Belize. History The mosque was officially opened on 16 May 2008 in a ceremony attended by Chief Justice of Belize, Chief Justice Abdulai Conteh. The Kremandala Show
The Kremandala Show is a Belizean political commentary talk show airing on Krem Radio and Krem Television. It premiered in 1994 on radio and 2005 on television and was hosted by KREM founder Evan X Hyde. Format Hyde is joined weekly by four panelists to discuss current issues in Belize. The four official panelists as of January 2008 are Bill Lindo, Cedric Flowers, Henry Gordon and Rufus X. After three rounds of often furious debate and discussion, occasionally punctuated by questions from moderator Hyde, the last segment of the show, called "The Parting Shot", presents the final opportunity for panelists to share their final thoughts for the week. 2008 Belizean Constitutional Referendum
A constitutional referendum, the nation's first, was held in Belize on 7 February 2008, coinciding with the 2008 Belizean legislative election, 2008 general elections. The question asked was: "Should the Senate of Belize be elected?" While approved by 61% of voters with a 46% turnout, the referendum was only consultative, and the government chose not to implement the result, considering the low turnout.
