Portuguese Television
Television in Portugal was introduced in 1956 (test broadcasts) by Radiotelevisão Portuguesa (now named Rádio e Televisão de Portugal), which held the nationwide television monopoly until late 1992. Regular broadcasting was introduced on March 7, 1957. Colour transmissions were introduced on March 10, 1980. Digital terrestrial television (DTT) was introduced at a very late stage when compared to other countries in Europe and with limited channels, and according to the European Audiovisual Observatory it occupies the last place in 34 European countries with the weakest offer on digital terrestrial television, in such a way that most Portuguese are subscribers of cable (HFC) or IPTV (DSL or FTTH) platforms, in percentages higher than in the rest of Europe and these platforms are well developed with many channels. Ídolos (Portuguese TV Series)
''Ídolos'' is a Portuguese reality television show based on the popular British show Pop Idol. The show is a contest to determine the best young singer in Portugal. The first two seasons were hosted by Sílvia Alberto and Pedro Granger. The show, then went to a sort of hiatus, and, after only a lukewarm reaction by the viewers for season two, the show has officially been replaced by another casting show on its broadcast station, ''Família Superstar'', which ended in 2008. After an absence for four years the show returned for a third season to SIC in fall 2009 now with João Manzarra and Cláudia Vieira hosting. Season 3 finished in February 2010, and Season 4 started in September. Ídolos had three audition cities to find the best talent in all of Portugal, including: Porto, Beja and Lisbon. However, in the third and fourth seasons, auditions were made in Porto, Lisbon, Aveiro, Portimão and Estoril. The show did not return in fall 2011 but instead returned in 2012. The show ... Sofia Vitória
Sofia Vitória Inácio (born 28 April 1979 in Setúbal, Portugal) is a Portuguese singer. Prior to recording her debut album "Palavra de Mulher", she performed in Portugal's main concert halls, as well as in Brazil, Spain, the Netherlands, Italy, Macao, Wales and Turkey. Sofia is strongly influenced not only by Jazz but also by World Music. She released her first record in partnership with pianist Luís Figueiredo. All the songs included in the album "Palavra de Mulher" tell the story of feminine characters who inhabit Chico Buarque's musical world. Operação Triunfo
''Operação Triunfo (OT)'' is the Portuguese version of the original Star Academy (in the original Spanish version of the reality show ''Operación Triunfo'' broadcast by RTP). The first two seasons were hosted by Catarina Furtado, and the other two seasons were presented by Sílvia Alberto. The Portuguese version follows the regular format, with the 12-20 students being put into a music academy and training songs for a week, and singing in the "Gala" at the end of the week, usually on Saturdays. A jury composed by four personalities of the music world will judge the students performances and nominate four of them. Of those four, one is saved by the professors and another is saved by the students. The two remaining students are up for elimination. In the following week, one of the two nominees is saved. Rádio E Televisão De Portugal
Rádio e Televisão de Portugal (RTP) is the public service broadcasting organisation of Portugal. It operates four national television channels and three national radio stations, as well as several satellite and cable offerings. The current company dates from 2007, with the merger of two previously separate companies Radiodifusão Portuguesa (RDP; the radio broadcaster) and Radiotelevisão Portuguesa (television broadcaster), although they had been grouped under a single holding company and common branding since 2004. RTP1
RTP1 (''RTP um'') is a Portuguese free-to-air television channel owned and operated by state-owned public broadcaster Rádio e Televisão de Portugal (RTP). It is the company's flagship television channel, and is known for broadcasting mainstream and generalist programming, including '' Telejornal'' news bulletins, prime time drama, cinema and entertainment, and major breaking news, sports and special events. It was launched on 7 March 1957 as the first regular television service in Portugal. It was the only one until 25 December 1968, when RTP launched a second channel. Two regional channels followed, RTP Madeira on 6 August 1972 and RTP Açores on 10 August 1975. As RTP held a monopoly on television broadcasting in the country, they were the only television channels until the first commercial television was launched on 6 October 1992, when SIC started broadcasting nationwide. RTP3 (''RTP três'') is a Portuguese free-to-air television channel owned and operated by state-owned public broadcaster Rádio e Televisão de Portugal (RTP). It is the company's all-news television channel, and is known for its 24-hour rolling news service and its live coverage of breaking news. It was launched on 15 October 2001. It received other names, such as "NTV", "RTPN", and "RTP Informação" until it adopted its current name "RTP3". It is available on basic cable, satellite and terrestrial television. History The channel was launched on 15 October 2001 as NTV, a cable news channel headquartered in Porto. SIC Comédia
SIC Comédia was a Portuguese TV channel, available on cable. It was part of the television network SIC (''Sociedade Independente de Comunicação''). It closed on 31 December 2006. The channel aired shows such as ''Seinfeld'', ''The Tonight Show'', ''Late Night with Conan O'Brien'', ''Cheers'', ''The Benny Hill Show'', ''M*A*S*H'', ''Benson'', ''Saturday Night Live'', '' 'Allo 'Allo!'', ''Comedy Inc.'', ''Mad About You'', ''Everybody Loves Raymond'', ''Frasier'', '' My Hero'', ''Alas Smith and Jones'', ''The War Next Door''. It also showed home-grown products (either reruns from the main channel or original commissions), such as ''Biqueirada'', '' HermanSic'' and ''Prazer dos Diabos''. Henrique Mendes
Henrique Mendes (January 2, 1931 – July 8, 2004) was a Portuguese television presenter and actor, he is best known for hosting several editions of Festival da Canção. Mendes joint Rádio Renascença in 1950 as a radio announcer and in 1958 he joint RTP and was invited to join as a television presenter by Artur Agostinho and he became known in Portugal for hosting Festival da Canção (Portuguese heats for the Eurovision Song Contest), which he hosted from 1964 until 1968, again in 1972 and again in 1986, in addition the latter also commentated on the Eurovision Song Contest for Portugal between 1965 and 1967 and again from 1969 until 1972. He also hosted a short-lived Portuguese version of ''Let's Make A Deal'' called ''Negócio Fechado'' running from 1999 to 2000 on Sociedade Independente de Comunicação.
