Portuguese Macau (officially the Province of Macau until 1976, and then the Autonomous Region of Macau from 1976 to 1999) was a Portuguese Empire, Portuguese colony that existed from the first official Portuguese settlement in 1557 to the end of colonial rule and the transfer of sovereignty over Macau to the China, People's Republic of China in 1999. Vasco Joaquim Rocha Vieira, GCTE GCC GCIH ComA (; b. Lagoa, 16 August 1939), is a retired Portuguese Army officer who was last Governor of Macau. Background He is the son of João da Silva Vieira (b. Lagoa or Faro on 9 November 1913) and his wife, Maria Vieira Rocha and being the paternal grandson of André de Sousa Vieira and his wife, Teresa de Jesus da Silva. Degrees He is a Portuguese Administrator and a General Officer of Military Engineering of the Portuguese Army with the Course of the Army School and Licentiate in civil engineering by the Instituto Superior Técnico (Superior Technical Institute) of the University of Lisbon, and has the General and Complementary Course of the General Staff of the Army, the Superior Course of Command and Direction of the Portuguese Armed Forces and the Course of National Defense. The Museum of Sacred Art and Crypt (; pt, Museu de Arte Sacra e Cripta) is a museum in Santo António, Macau, China. History The museum was constructed at the former site of the College of the Mother of God and Church of Saint Paul. It was inaugurated on 23 October 1996. Exhibitions The museum exhibits objects of high historical and artistic value from different churches and convents of Macau. The crypt exhibits granite rock at the center of its area where it lies a tomb with walls decorated with Japanese and Vietnamese martyrs relics. Santo António, Macau
Santo António is a civil parish ( pt, freguesia) in the western portion of the Macau Peninsula of Macau. It has the highest population density in Macau (98,776 persons per km²). This parish was one of five in the former Municipality of Macau, one of Macau's two municipalities that were abolished on 31 December 2001 by Law No. 17/2001, following the 1999 transfer of sovereignty over Macau from Portugal to China. While their administrative functions have since been removed, these parishes are still retained nominally. It is north of the parish of Sé, south of Nossa Senhora de Fátima parish, west of São Lázaro parish, and east of the Inner Harbor (Porto Interior).
