The following is a list of events relating to television in Ireland from 1990. Events *4 June – Ian Dempsey presents his final day of the afternoon children's television block ''Dempsey's Den''. He will be taken over by Ray D'Arcy and the name will be changed to ''The Den''. *24 July – The Broadcasting Act comes into law. Television In Ireland
Television in the Republic of Ireland is available through a variety of platforms. The digital terrestrial television service is known as Saorview and is the primary source of broadcast television since analogue transmissions ended on 24 October 2012. Digital satellite (from Sky Ireland, Saorsat and other European satellite service providers are available) and digital cable (from Virgin Media Ireland) are also widely used. The Irish satellite fill-in service (Saorsat) is via Ka-Sat using the Irish KA band spot and has been available since June 2011. While many people receive their television via Saorview, which is broadcast by 2RN, more than half subscribe to multichannel television networks. The biggest single multichannel television network in Ireland is Sky Ireland, which broadcasts digital satellite television services. ''Yellowthread Street'' is a British television police drama, first broadcast in 1990, that focuses on the work of a group of detectives in the Royal Hong Kong Police. Developed and produced by Ranald Graham, the series was loosely based on the novels by William Leonard Marshall. A single season of thirteen episodes was produced by Yorkshire Television and broadcast on ITV from January 13 to April 7, 1990. The series starred Ray Lonnen as principal character Alex Vale, with Bruce Payne, Robert Taylor, Doreen Chan, Tzi Ma, Mark McGann and Catherine Neilson also appearing as detectives in the series. The series was well received by viewers and critics alike, despite only lasting one season. ''The World of David the Gnome'', originally titled ''David, el Gnomo'' (also known as ''David, the Gnome''), is a Spanish animated television series based on the children's book '' The Secret Book of Gnomes'', by the Dutch author Wil Huygen and illustrator Rien Poortvliet. Pals is a medieval town in Catalonia, northern Spain, a few kilometres from the sea in the heart of the Bay of Emporda on the Costa Brava. It lies on the C31 Palafrugell–L'Estartit road. The GR 92 long distance footpath, which roughly follows the length of the Mediterranean coast of Spain, passes through the town. ''Dear Sarah'' is a 1990 made-for-television film about Giuseppe Conlon who was wrongfully sentenced to twelve years imprisonment after being implicated as one of the Maguire Seven during the 1970s. The film was produced by Raidió Teilifís Éireann, directed by Frank Cvitanovich and written by Tom McGurk. It starred Stella McCusker, Barry McGovern and Paddy Rocks, and was aired in 1990 by RTÉ in Ireland and on the ITV Network in the United Kingdom. Plot summary The film is based on the letters Giuseppe Conlon wrote from prison to his wife Sarah after he was wrongfully convicted in 1976 along with seven members of the Maguire family of running an IRA bomb factory in North London. Conlon received twelve years imprisonment but died in custody in 1980. ''Round the Bend!'' is a satirical British children's television series, which ran on Children's ITV for three series from January 6, 1989, to May 7, 1991. The programme was produced by Hat Trick Productions for Yorkshire Television.
