1984 Virginia Slims World Championship Series
The 1984 Virginia Slims World Championship Series was the 14th season since the foundation of the Women's Tennis Association. It commenced in March 1984, and concluded in March 1985 after events. The Virginia Slims World Championship Series was the elite tour for professional women's tennis organised by the Women's Tennis Association (WTA). It was held in place of the WTA Tour from 1983 until 1987 and featured tournaments that had previously been part of the ''Toyota Series'' and the ''Avon Series''. It included the four Grand Slam tournaments and a series of other events. ITF tournaments were not part of the tour, although they awarded points for the WTA World Ranking. The Grand Slam in tennis is the achievement of winning all four major championships in one discipline in a calendar year, also referred to as the "Calendar-year Grand Slam" or "Calendar Slam". In doubles, a team may accomplish the Grand Slam playing together or a player may achieve it with different partners. The 1984 Virginia Slims of Florida was a women's tennis tournament played on outdoor clay courts in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida in the United States that was part of the Category 3 tier of the 1984 Virginia Slims World Championship Series. Mary Lou Piatek-Daniels (born August 6, 1961) is a retired tennis player from the U.S. who played on the WTA Tour during the 1980s. In 1979, she was the no. 1 junior in the world. Andrea Leand (born January 18, 1964) is a former professional tennis player from the U.S. Leand was the No. 1 ranked junior in the United States and the No. 2 ranked junior in the World in 1981. Alycia Moulton (born February 18, 1961) is a retired American tennis player. Career Moulton won the U.S. Junior Championships in 1979 and was runner-up at the Wimbledon Junior Championships in 1979. Wendy White-Prausa (born 29 September 1960) is a former professional tennis player. Early life and education White was born in 1960 in the state of Georgia. When she was 8, she learned to play tennis at a summer camp. White became a dominant junior player in her state and on the sectional and national levels. Bonnie Gadusek (born September 11, 1963) is a retired American professional tennis player. Career Gadusek started a career in gymnastics, training for the 1980 Olympics, but fell from uneven parallel bars and landed on her neck, dislocating two vertebrae. Beth Herr (born 28 May 1964) is an American tennis player from Centerville, Ohio, who won four Junior Grand Slam titles, the NCAA singles and team titles and one professional tennis tournament. In her home state of Ohio, she was a two-time high school singles state champion (1980-1981). Her NCAA singles title came in 1983. Beatriz "Gigi" Fernández (born February 22, 1964) is a Puerto Rican former professional tennis player. Fernández won 17 major doubles titles and two Olympic gold medals representing the United States, and reached the world No. 1 ranking in doubles.
