1977 WTA Tour
The 1977 WTA Tour consisted of a number of tennis tournaments for female tennis players. It was composed of the newly streamlined version of the Virginia Slims Circuit (which was now an 11-week tour of the US) and the Colgate Series. The year 1977 also saw the creation of the first official ranking system and these rankings were used to determine acceptance into the tournaments. Schedule This is a calendar of all events which were part of either the Virginia Slims circuit or the Colgate International Series in the year 1977, with player progression documented from the quarterfinals stage. Chris Evert
Christine Marie Evert (born December 21, 1954), known as Chris Evert Lloyd from 1979 to 1987, is an American former world No. 1 tennis player. Evert won 18 major singles titles, including a record seven French Open titles and a joint-record six US Open titles (tied with Serena Williams). She was ranked world No. 1 for 260 weeks, and was the year-end world No. 1 singles player seven times (1974–78, 1980, 1981). Alongside Martina Navratilova, her greatest rival, Evert dominated women's tennis in the 1970s and 1980s. Evert reached 34 major singles finals, the most in history. In singles, Evert reached the semifinals or better in 52 of the 56 majors she played, including at 34 consecutive majors entered from the 1971 US Open through the 1983 French Open. Terry Holladay
Terry Holladay (born November 28, 1955) is an American former professional tennis player who played between 1974 and 1987, whose tennis career is particularly remembered for her pregnancy and its impact on protected rankings. Biography Holladay was born in Charlotte, North Carolina, and grew up in La Jolla, San Diego, California, attending and graduating from La Jolla High School. Following her retirement from tennis, Holladay became a realtor. In 2000, she survived breast cancer. She married Dr. Philip Arthur Higginbottom, with whom she founded the Dina Humanitarian Foundation. Tennis career She turned professional in 1974 and regards 1976 as her best year. Brigitte Cuypers
Brigitte Cuypers (born 3 December 1955) is a retired tennis player from South Africa. Cuypers reached the final of the South African Open (tennis), South African Championships singles event on five consecutive occasions from 1975 to 1979 and won the title in 1976, 1978 and 1979. In 1977, she won the doubles title at the Italian Open (tennis), Italian Open with compatriot Marise Kruger. In August 1979, she was runner–up at the Canadian Open (tennis), Canadian Open, losing the final in three sets to Laura duPont. Cuypers won the singles title at the Rhodesian Open in 1974 and 1975.
