Events *6 January – Long running US children's educational series ''Sesame Street'' makes its premiere in Northern Ireland on UTV. Despite already airing on RTÉ in Ireland since debuting in 1971, airings of the series on UTV are also available in various parts of the Republic. *February – The Broadcasting Review Committee published an interim report recommending the establishment of a second television channel for the Republic of Ireland. It is envisaged that it will broadcast a mix of domestic and foreign programming. *14 March – Dr Conor Cruise O'Brien is appointed Minister for Posts and Telegraphs. *Undated – Figures published in the RTÉ Annual Report suggest that 77% (542,000) of households in the Republic of Ireland now have a television set. Television In Ireland
Television in the Republic of Ireland is available through a variety of platforms. The digital terrestrial television service is known as Saorview and is the primary source of broadcast television since analogue transmissions ended on 24 October 2012. Digital satellite (from Sky Ireland, Saorsat and other European satellite service providers are available) and digital cable (from Virgin Media Ireland) are also widely used. The Irish satellite fill-in service (Saorsat) is via Ka-Sat using the Irish KA band spot and has been available since June 2011. While many people receive their television via Saorview, which is broadcast by 2RN, more than half subscribe to multichannel television networks. The biggest single multichannel television network in Ireland is Sky Ireland, which broadcasts digital satellite television services. The Late Late Show (Ireland)
''The Late Late Show'', with its title often shortened to ''The Late Late'', is an Irish chat show. It is the world's second longest-running late-night talk show, after the American ''The Tonight Show''. Perceived as the official flagship television programme of the Republic of Ireland's public service broadcaster Raidió Teilifís Éireann (RTÉ), it is regarded as an Irish television institution, and is broadcast live across two hours plus in front of a studio audience on Friday nights between September and May at 21.30. Certain segments are sometimes pre-recorded and aired within the live parts of the show. Sybil Mulcahy
Sybil Mulcahy (born 1973) is an Irish journalist and presenter, known for co-presenting TV3's ''The Morning Show with Sybil & Martin'' since 2009. Early life Born in Ballsbridge, Dublin, Mulcahy was educated locally before being conferred with a Bachelor of Arts from University College Dublin. She subsequently attended University College Galway, where she attained a H.Dip in Applied Communications. She has also completed a marketing diploma. Career She began her broadcasting career in San Diego in the mid-1990s, where she worked on the Education Channel as a reporter and editor in a CBS affiliate. She returned to Ireland in 1999 where she joined TV3. She worked with the station's news division and spent several years as entertainment reporter. Amanda Byram (born 16 June 1973) is an Irish television presenter and former model, best known for co-presenting BBC One game show ''Total Wipeout'' with Richard Hammond, the Irish version of ''Dancing with the Stars'' on RTÉ1 and for hosting American television shows, ''The Swan'' and ''Paradise Hotel''. Gráinne Seoige
Gráinne Seoige (; born 5 November 1973) is an Irish journalist, news anchor and documentary and entertainment television presenter. A noted Irish language supporter, Seoige is the only television personality to have worked with all four Irish terrestrial television stations—TG4, TV3, RTÉ One and RTÉ2—and to have read the inaugural news bulletins on three separate channels—TG4, TV3, and Sky News Ireland. Jenny Huston
Jenny Huston (born 24 August 1973) is a Canadian presenter of radio and television in Ireland. She was disc jockey on RTÉ 2fm, an occasional presenter on RTÉ Radio 1 and a television presenter with channels operated by Raidió Teilifís Éireann.; Huston presents an indie rock and pop music show on Friday nights and a rock anthems show which is broadcast on Sunday nights. A highlight of her television career was co-hosting RTÉ's Electric Picnic coverage with Tom Dunne in 2006. In July 2006, Huston fronted RTÉ 2fm's coverage of Oxegen that summer. She has broadcast for RTÉ 2fm at Oxegen 2007, Oxegen 2008 and Oxegen 2009, as well as continuing her coverage of the Electric Picnic for the radio station. Brendan Courtney (born 24 June 1971 in Dublin) is an Irish TV presenter and fashion designer. He was the first openly gay presenter in Ireland. He has hosted ''Wanderlust'' on RTÉ Two, ''The Brendan Courtney Show'' on TV3. Career Courtney began his career on RTÉ Two's ''Wanderlust'' and ITV1's ''Love Match UK''. Ryan Tubridy (born 28 May 1973), nicknamed 'Tubs ' is an Irish broadcaster. He presents ''The Ryan Tubridy Show'' and '' The Late Late Show''. Tubridy previously presented RTÉ 2fm breakfast radio show ''The Full Irish'', which at its end was the second most popular radio programme in Ireland. For five seasons from 2004 until 2009, he presented the Saturday night TV chat show ''Tubridy Tonight'' on RTÉ One. He later left RTÉ 2fm for a number of years to present ''The Tubridy Show'' on RTÉ Radio 1, but returned to RTÉ 2fm in 2010 to present a weekday morning radio show from 09:00 to 11:00, following the termination of '' The Gerry Ryan Show'' with the presenter's sudden death. ''Hall's Pictorial Weekly'' was an Irish satirical television series broadcast on Raidió Teilifís Éireann from 1971 to 1980. Regarded as RTÉ's flagship comedy show, it featured satirical sketches on current news stories, politics and popular culture, as well as parody songs, comedy sketches, re-edited videos, cartoons and spoof television formats. The show was written, presented and edited by Frank Hall and featured a cast including Frank Kelly and Eamon Morrissey. History Development ''Hall's Pictorial Weekly'' had its origins in the daily regional news magazine ''Newsbeat'', which ran between 1964 and 1971. The programme was noted for concentrating on colourful characters and off-beat reportage, as well as occasional comedy sketches. According to Hall, it occurred to him one day that he would be much more the master of the situation if he simply sat at home and wrote sketches, instead of looking for stories around the country. ''Wanderly Wagon'' is an Irish children's television series which aired on RTÉ from Saturday 30 September 1967Hourihane, Anne Marie''Sunday Tribune'' 11 August 2002. until 1982. Plot ''Wanderly Wagon'' followed human and puppet characters as they travelled around Ireland visiting interesting locations, rescuing Princesses and generally doing good. The original premise of the show expanded to follow the characters to magical lands of Irish mythology, and into outer space. The Wagon could fly, and using chroma key effects, the Wagon was shown hovering in mid-air, landing in various magical lands, and even traveling underwater.
