The 1972 Women's Tennis Circuit was composed of the second annual Virginia Slims Circuit, a tour of tennis tournaments for female tennis players, sponsored by Virginia Slims cigarettes and the Commercial Union Assurance Grand Prix. Evonne Goolagong
Evonne Fay Goolagong Cawley (née Goolagong; born 31 July 1951) is an Australian former world No. 1 tennis player. Goolagong was one of the world's leading players in the 1970s and early 1980s. At the age of 19, she won the French Open singles and the Australian Open doubles championships (the latter with Margaret Court). She won the women's singles tournament at Wimbledon in 1971. In 1980, she became the first mother to win Wimbledon for 66 years. Goolagong went on to win 14 Grand Slam tournament titles: seven in singles (four at the Australian Open, two at Wimbledon and one at the French Open), six in women's doubles, and one in mixed doubles. She represented Australia in three Fed Cup competitions, winning the title in 1971, 1973 and 1974, and was Fed Cup captain for three consecutive years. Gail Chanfreau
Gail Chanfreau (née Sherriff; born 3 April 1945), also known as Gail Lovera and Gail Benedetti, is a French former amateur and professional tennis player. Tennis career Chanfreau was born in Australia, but moved to France in 1968. Chanfreau made her first appearance in the Federation Cup for Australia in 1966. She played for France Fed Cup team from 1969 to 1980. When Gail beat her sister Carol Sherriff, who reached the third round of the Australian Open on five occasions, 8–10, 6–3, 6–3 in the 1966 Wimbledon Championships second round, that was the second match between sisters at Wimbledon, the first being in the 1884 Wimbledon Championships when Maud Watson beat Lillian. The 1972 British Motor Cars Invitational, also known as the BMC Invitational, was a women's tennis tournament that took place on indoor carpet courts at the Civic Auditorium in San Francisco in the United States. Lesley Bowrey
Lesley Rosemary Turner Bowrey, AM (née Turner; born 16 August 1942) is a retired professional tennis player from Australia. Her career spanned two decades from the late 1950s until the late 1970s. Turner Bowrey won the singles title at the French Championships, one of the four Grand Slam events, in 1963 and 1965. In addition she won 11 Grand Slam events in doubles and mixed doubles. Turner Bowrey achieved her highest singles ranking of No. 2 in 1964. Career Bowrey won 13 Grand Slam titles during her career: two in singles, seven in women's doubles, and four in mixed doubles. Marilyn Tesch is an Australian former professional tennis player. A native of Bundaberg, Queensland, Tesch was a two-time Australian Open doubles quarter-finalist. Janet Young (tennis)
Janet Anne Young (born 22 October 1951) is a former professional tennis player from Australia. Biography Professional tennis Young competed on the WTA Tour in the 1970s and won a total of three doubles titles, all of which came partnering Evonne Goolagong. The pair were finalists in eight tournaments across the 1973 season and semi-finalists at the Australian Open, Wimbledon Championships and US Open. As a singles player, Young won the Queensland Open and South Australian Championships in 1973, both non-tour events. At the 1973 Wimbledon Championships, she won through to the fourth round, where she faced Chris Evert. She took Evert to a third set, which she lost 6–8, having led 4–0.
