Elsy Jacobs
Elsy Jacobs (4 March 1933 – 27 February 1998) was a Luxembourgish road bicycle racer. She became the first ever women's Road World Champion when she won the inaugural race on 30 August 1958. Later the same year she broke the women's hour record on 9 November, riding 41,347 m on the Vigorelli velodrome in Milan; the record stood for 14 years. Biography Born in Garnich, Luxembourg, Elsy Jacobs was one of many children; three of her brothers were also racing cyclists, Roger, Raymond and Edmond Jacobs (who competed in the Tour de France). Both a sports centre and hall were named in her honour. The Grand Prix Elsy Jacobs was established and is based in her home town of Garnich. Since 2008, ten years after her death, the race has appeared on the UCI women's elite cycle racing calendar. Beryl Burton
Beryl Burton, OBE (12 May 1937 – 5 May 1996) was an English racing cyclist who dominated women's cycle racing in the UK, winning more than 90 domestic championships and seven world titles, and setting numerous national records. She set a women's record for the 12-hour time-trial which exceeded the men's record for two years. Early life Burton was born Beryl Charnock in the Halton area of Leeds, West Yorkshire and lived in the nearby Morley area throughout her life, racing mainly for Morley Cycling Club and later Knaresborough CC. In childhood, she suffered chronic health problems which included 15 months in hospital and a convalescent home due to rheumatic fever. Yvonne Reynders
Yvonne Reynders (born 4 August 1937) is a former track and road cyclist from Belgium. With Beryl Burton of Great Britain, Reynders was one of the top female riders of the 1960s, winning 13 medals at world championships, including seven gold medals. Reynders' first sport was athletics: her heroine was Dutch athlete Fanny Blankers-Koen, who won four sprint golds at the 1948 Summer Olympics. However, after her coaches told her that she did not have the speed on the track to follow in Blankers-Koen's footsteps, she initially switched to the discus, winning two consecutive Belgian junior discus titles in 1955 and 1956. Reynders then switched to cycle racing, having ridden a carrier tricycle when delivering coal in Antwerp after leaving school at the age of 16. The UCI Road World Championships Elite Women's Road Race is a one-day event for professional cyclists that takes place annually.
