1959 U.S. National Championships (tennis)
The 1959 U.S. National Championships (now known as the US Open) was a tennis tournament that took place on outdoor grass courts at two locations in the United States. The men's and women's singles as well as the mixed doubles were played from September 4 through September 13 at the West Side Tennis Club, Forest Hills in New York City, while the men's and women's doubles were held at the Longwood Cricket Club in Chestnut Hill, Massachusetts from August 16 though August 23, 1959. It was the 79th staging of the U.S. National Championships, and the fourth Grand Slam tennis event of the year. Neale Fraser and Maria Bueno won the singles titles. Grand Slam (tennis)
The Grand Slam in tennis is the achievement of winning all four major championships in one discipline in a calendar year, also referred to as the "Calendar-year Grand Slam" or "Calendar Slam". In doubles, a team may accomplish the Grand Slam playing together or a player may achieve it with different partners. Winning all four major championships consecutively but not within the same calendar year is referred to as a "non-calendar-year Grand Slam", while winning the four majors at any point during the course of a career is known as a "Career Grand Slam". The Grand Slam tournaments, also referred to as majors, are the world's four most important annual professional tennis tournaments. The 1960 Australian Championships was a tennis tournament that took place on outdoor Grass courts at the Milton Courts, Brisbane, Australia from 22 January to 1 February. It was the 48th edition of the Australian Championships (now known as the Australian Open), the 5th held in Brisbane, and the first Grand Slam tournament of the year. Robert 'Bob' Mark (28 November 1937 – 21 July 2006) was a professional tennis player from Australia. Mark won the Australian Men's Doubles title in 1959, 1960 and 1961 partnering Rod Laver. Janet Hopps Adkisson (born August 4, 1934) is a former professional tennis player from the U.S. Adkisson was ranked in the top 15 female tennis players three times, and was, according to the State of Washington Sports Hall of Fame, "once recognized as one of the world's top woman tennis players". Her best singles performance at a Grand Slam tournament was reaching the fourth round at the Wimbledon Championships in 1959 and 1960 which she lost to Sally Moore and Renée Schuurman respectively.
