Music Of Norway
Much has been learned about early music in Norway from physical artifacts found during archaeological digs. These include instruments such as the lur. Viking and medieval sagas also describe musical activity, as do the accounts of priests and pilgrims from all over Europe coming to visit St Olaf's grave in Trondheim. In the later part of the 19th century, Norway experienced economic growth leading to greater industrialization and urbanization. More music was made in the cities, and opera performances and symphony concerts were considered to be of high standards. In this era both prominent composers (like Edvard Grieg and Johan Svendsen) and performers combined the European traditions with Norwegian tones. The import of music and musicians for dance and entertainment grew, and this continued in the 20th century, even more so when gramophone records and radio became common. Kjetil Bjerkestrand
Kjetil Bjerkestrand (born 18 May 1955 in Kristiansund, Norway) is a Norwegian musician (keyboards), composer, arranger and record producer, known as music arranger for artists like Ray Charles, Dee Dee Bridgewater, Keith Emerson, Ian Hunter, Jon Lord, Ute Lemper and a-ha. As a musician, he has participated in recordings with a-ha, Ray Charles, Ute Lemper, Ian Hunter, Dance with a Stranger, DumDum Boys, Jonas Fjeld Band, Marius Müller, TNT, Arve Tellefsen, Bobbysocks, Bjørn Eidsvåg, Carola Häggkvist and Dee Dee Bridgewater. Career As the son and grandson of organists, playing the organ came naturally to Bjerkestrand and he started early to compose music as well. Yngve Slettholm
Yngve Slettholm (born 28 December 1955) is a Norwegian cultural executive, politician for the Christian Democratic Party and Salvationist. Early life and education Slettholm attended the Norwegian Academy of Music from 1974 to 1980. He received his degree in music education in 1977 and completed his studies in composition under Finn Mortensen, receiving his diploma in composition in 1980. From 1986 to 1988, in the Fulbright Program, he studied at the State University of New York at Buffalo, with Morton Feldman as his teacher in composition. He received his PhD in composition in 1989. Composing career Slettholm began his composing career in contemporary music in 1980. In the period 1982–1986, he was the President of the national organisation Ny Musikk (the Norwegian section of the International Society for Contemporary Music) until he traveled to the United States to continue his training. Morten Gunnar Larsen
Morten Gunnar Larsen (born 1 October 1955) is a Norwegian jazz pianist and composer, well known for several stride piano recordings and collaborations. Career Larsen studied classical piano at Norges Musikkhøgskole (1978). In 1975 he had his debut records, ''Classic Rags and Stomps'', for which he won Spellemannprisen in 1976. He next founded Ophelia Ragtime Orchestra in 1977 and performed with stride pianist Eubie Blake, for whom Larsen composed ''Memories of Eubie''. Pål Thowsen
Pål Thowsen (born 15 July 1955) is a Norwegian jazz drummer. He has released several solo albums and received two Spellemannprisen awards. Career Thowsen was born in Lillestrøm, and started his career in the early 1970s as a musician in Arild Andersen's quartet, finding international success throughout the decade. At the same time he was a member of the jazz rock band Moose Loose. In 1973 he collaborated for the first time with jazz guitarist Jon Eberson, a collaboration that has lasted throughout his career in various groups, and has recorded about ten albums with Ketil Bjørnstad. Other musicians he has worked with include Radka Toneff, Terje Rypdal, Palle Mikkelborg, Odd Riisnæs and Dag Arnesen and a member of the Jazzpunkensemblet, the Net, Halle / Eberson / Thowsen / Kjellemyr, Ole Paus and Finn Kalvik, Sinikka Langeland and Metropolitan. Bergen Big Band
Bergen Big Band (BBB) is a Norwegian big band established 1991 as a continuation of Knut Kristiansen's Bergen Band. BBB is known from cooperations with musicians like Phil Woods, Paquito D'Rivera, Joe Henderson, Maria Schneider, Diana Krall, Sissel Kyrkjebø, Andy Sheppard, Martial Solal, Mathias Rüegg, Gianluigi Trovesi, Mathias Eick, Ole Kock Hansen, Etta Cameron, Karin Krog, John Surman, Dino Saluzzi, Gustavo Bergalli, Berit Opheim, Jan Magne Førde, The Core, Ab und Zu, Vidar Johansen, Paolo Vinaccia, Ståle Storløkken, Palle Mikkelborg and Terje Rypdal among others. Jan Kåre Hystad
Jan Kåre "Hysen" Hystad (born 9 July 1955) is a Norwegian jazz musician (saxophone, clarinet, flute), and the older brother of jazz saxophonist Ole Jacob Hystad. He is known as leader of his own Quartet and as part of the Bergen Big Band with cooperations with Teje Rypdal, John Surman and Karin Krogh. Career Hystad was born in Stord and was classically educated at Griegakademiet, University of Bergen. Since 1978 he has been a resident of Bergen where he has been freelance musician, he led his own ensembles, as well as being involved as Musical Director & Musician at Den Nationale Scene and in Bergen Big Band. Magnetic North Orchestra
Magnetic North Orchestra established in Oslo, Norway (1992–2005) was a Norwegian jazz orchestra, created and led by Jon Balke. MNO was originally a jazz ensemble inspired by Oslo 13, put together with strings and percussion. As Olympic musical ambassador from 1993 to 1994, for the 1994 Winter Olympics at Lillehammer, Jon Balke created the work ''Magnetic North'' for a larger group, and under this name (MNO) he has toured in Europe, USA and Japan. MNO was further developed with fourteen string musicians from "Stavanger Symfoniorkester" for the production ''Grand Magnetic'' (2001), and in a version with the "TrondheimSolistene". Jon Balke
Jon Georg Balke (born 7 June 1955) is a Norwegian jazz pianist who leads the Magnetic North Orchestra. He is the younger brother of saxophonist Erik Balke. Career Balke started playing classical piano but switched to blues at 12, though he performs within several genres. At the age of 18 he joined Arild Andersen's quartet. By the mid-1980s he worked on his own and would become one of Norway's leading jazz composers. He was active in the groups of Radka Toneff and in the Afrofusion group E'olén before joining Oslo 13 and Masqualero in the early 1980s. From 1989 he focused on his own projects, such as JøKleBa (with Audun Kleive and Per Jørgensen) and the Magnetic North Orchestra for which he composed the commissioned work ''Il Cenoneat'' to Vossajazz 1992. Balke formed the percussion group Batagraf in 2002, and created the concept work Siwan' with singer Amina Alaoui in 2007.
