Ómar Ragnarsson
Ómar Þorfinnur Ragnarsson (born 16 September 1940) is an Icelandic environment activist and former entertainer, news reporter and rally driver. Born in Reykjavík, Ómar began acting on stage at the age of 12 and started his career as a stand-up comedian when he was 18. He has written a considerable number of songs and lyrics, performed by him or other Icelandic pop artists. Ómar studied law and has been a professional aviator and pilot since 1967. He worked as a TV reporter for RUV Channel 1 from 1969–1988, for TV Channel 2 from 1988–1995, and again for RUV from 1995. Later he started his own film production, mainly on nature and environmental issues in Iceland, Norway and the USA. He has also written 10 books in Iceland. Ómar Ragnarsson turned activist for Icelandic nature and in September 2006, he led protest walkagainst the controversial Kárahnjúkar Hydropower Plant. Rannveig Guðmundsdóttir (born 15 September 1940) is an Icelandic politician. She has served as a member of the Icelandic parliament, as Minister of Social Services in the Government of Iceland, and was President of the Nordic Council in 2005. Early life Rannveig was born in Ísafjörður, Iceland, the daughter of skipper (boating) Guðmundur Kr. Guðmundsson (born 15 August 1897, died 12 January 1961) and homemaker Sigurjóna Guðmundína Jónasdóttir (born 14 January 1903, died 9 September 1954). In 1960 she married technologist Sverrir Jónsson (born 9 July 1939). She studied computer programming 1970–1972 in Oslo, Norway and Reykjavík, Iceland. Invasion Of Iceland
The invasion of Iceland (codenamed Operation Fork) by the Royal Navy and Royal Marines occurred on 10 May 1940, during World War II. The invasion took place because the British government feared that Iceland would be used by the Germans, who had recently overrun Denmark, which was in personal union with Iceland and which had previously been largely responsible for Iceland's foreign policy. The Government of Iceland issued a protest, charging that its neutrality had been "flagrantly violated" and "its independence infringed". At the start of the war, the UK imposed strict export controls on Icelandic goods, preventing profitable shipments to Germany, as part of its naval blockade. The UK offered assistance to Iceland, seeking co-operation "as a belligerent and an ally", but the Icelandic government refused and reaffirmed its neutrality. Hermann Jónasson
Hermann Jónasson (25 December 1896 – 22 January 1976) was an Icelandic politician of the Progressive Party, who was prime minister of Iceland on two occasions. He served his first term from 28 July 1934 to 16 May 1942. This term included one of the most difficult times in Icelandic history. In the pre-war years he had to deal with constant pressures from Nazi Germany and the United Kingdom regarding Iceland's diplomatic stance. After World War II started, the German occupation of Denmark severed the ties between the two countries, forcing Iceland to assume full control over its foreign interests which had previously been represented by Denmark. Subsequently, the British occupied Iceland on 10 May 1940. His second term lasted from 24 July 1956 to 23 December 1958.
