Listed here are the monarchs who reigned over Canada, starting with the French colony of Canada which subsequently became a British colony, followed by the British Dominion of Canada, and finally the present-day sovereign state of Canada. The date of the first claim by a monarch over Canada varies, with most sources giving the year as 1497, when John Cabot made landfall somewhere on the North American coast (likely either modern-day Newfoundland or Nova Scotia), and claimed the land for England on behalf of King Henry VII. However, some sources instead put this date at 1535 when the word "Canada" was first used to refer to the French colony of Canada, which was founded in the name of King Francis I. Monarchical governance subsequently evolved under a continuous succession of French, British, and eventually uniquely Canadian sovereigns. John William Fordham Johnson
John William Fordham Johnson (28 November 1866 – 28 November 1938) was a Canadians, Canadian businessman and the List of lieutenant governors of British Columbia#Lieutenant Governors of British Columbia, 1871-present, 14th Lieutenant Governor of British Columbia. Johnson was born in Spalding, Lincolnshire, England. He left the United Kingdom in 1888 and settled in Portland, Oregon where he worked for a bank. Ten years later, Johnson transferred to the Vancouver office of the bank. In 1900, Johnson quit and went to work for the B.C. Sugar Co., ultimately becoming president of that company in 1920. Johnson was appointed as the Lieutenant Governor of British Columbia in 1931. He was sworn into office on August 1 of that year and served in the role until 1936. Johnson retired from the office in ill health and died in Vancouver two years later. Esioff-Léon Patenaude
Esioff-Léon Patenaude, , often called E.L. Patenaude (February 12, 1875 – February 7, 1963) was a Canadian statesman who served as the 17th Lieutenant Governor of Quebec. Born in Saint-Isidore, Quebec, in 1875, he studied law at the University of Montreal and was called to the Quebec Bar in 1899. He established a successful law practice, was soon drawn to politics, and served as a chief organizer for the Conservative Party of Canada in Montreal. He was first elected to the Quebec National Assembly as a Conservative in La Prairie in the 1908 provincial election and was re-elected in the 1912 election. In 1915, he was elected to the House of Commons of Canada in a by-election and joined the government of Prime Minister Sir Robert Borden as Minister of Inland Revenue. He served in that position until early 1917, when he was appointed as Secretary of State and Minister of Mines. George Des Brisay De Blois
George DesBrisay DeBlois (October 21, 1887 – April 22, 1958) was a wholesale merchant and political figure on Prince Edward Island. He served as 14th Lieutenant Governor of Prince Edward Island from December 1933 to September 1939. He was born in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island Prince Edward Island (PEI; ) is one of the thirteen provinces and territories of Canada. It is the smallest province in terms of land area and population, but the most densely populated. The island has several nicknames: "Garden of the Gulf", ..., the son of Robert Fitzgerald DeBlois and Ethel Helen DesBrisay, and educated at Saint Peter's Collegiate. Herbert Alexander Bruce
Herbert Alexander Bruce (September 28, 1868 – June 23, 1963), served as the 15th Lieutenant Governor of Ontario from 1932 to 1937. Biography Born in Blackstock, Ontario near Port Perry, Bruce was educated as a surgeon at the University of Toronto and in Paris and Vienna. He was a member of the Royal College of Surgeons. He owned Wellesley Hospital in Toronto which he founded in 1911, and was a professor of surgery at the University of Toronto. In 1916, during World War I, he was appointed inspector-general of the Canadian Army Medical Corps by Sir Sam Hughes, and attained the rank of colonel in the Canadian Army (Permanent Active Militia). Bruce investigated medical practices in the army and issued a ''Report on the Canadian Army Medical Service'' which urged a complete reorganization of the medical corps. Murray MacLaren (April 30, 1861 – December 24, 1942) was a Canadian politician and the 18th Lieutenant Governor of New Brunswick. Born in Richibucto, New Brunswick, he was a physician before being elected to the House of Commons of Canada representing the New Brunswick riding of St. John—Albert in the 1921 federal election.
