United States gubernatorial elections were held in 1894, in 28 states, concurrent with the House and Senate elections, on November 6, 1894 (except in Alabama, Arkansas, Georgia, Maine, Oregon, Rhode Island and Vermont, which held early elections). The 1894 United States House of Representatives elections were held from June 4, 1894 to November 6, 1894, with special elections throughout the year. William Yates Atkinson
William Yates Atkinson (November 11, 1854 – August 8, 1899), was the 55th Governor of Georgia from 1894 to 1898. Early life Atkinson was born in the Oakland community in Meriwether County, Georgia on November 11, 1854. He graduated from the University of Georgia with an LL.B in 1877. He married Susan Cobb Milton, granddaughter of Florida Governor John Milton, in 1880. Political life After graduating from the University of Georgia, Atkinson began practicing law in Newnan. Atkinson was the solicitor of the Coweta Superior Court circuit. He then represented Coweta County as a member of the Georgia House of Representatives (1886–94), where he was the speaker, or presiding officer, during the last two years. 1894 Delaware Gubernatorial Election
The 1894 Delaware gubernatorial election was held on November 6, 1894. Incumbent Democratic Governor Robert J. Reynolds was barred from seeking a second term. Sussex County Clerk of the Peace Ebe W. Tunnell won the Democratic nomination to succeed Reynolds and faced businessman Joshua H. Marvil, the Republican nominee, in the general election. Though the Republican Party had long been dormant in the state, it had almost won the 1890 gubernatorial election. This year, Marvil narrowly defeated Tunnell, becoming the first Republican to win a gubernatorial election since 1862. However, Marvil's term as Governor did not last long; he died on April 8, 1895, elevating State Senate President William T. Watson to the governorship. Ernest Cady (September 6, 1842 – February 16, 1908) was an American businessman and politician who served as the 65th Lieutenant Governor of Connecticut from 1893 to 1895. Early life Cady was born on September 6, 1842 in Stafford, Connecticut. He was the second oldest of six children born to Garner Cady, Jr. (1805–1852), who was "killed in his prime by a runaway horse", and Emily (née Greene) Cady (1813–1894). His maternal grandparents were John Taylor Greene and Eleanor (née Edson) Greene and he was descended from Nicholas Cady, the namesake of Cady Pond, who lived in Watertown, Massachusetts in 1645. Career During the U.S. Civil War, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy and fought in the Battle of Mobile Bay.
