William Henry James Weale
William Henry James Weale (8 March 1832 – 26 April 1917) was a British art historian who lived and worked most of his life in Bruges and was one of the first to research the Early Netherlandish painting (then better known as "Flemish Primitives") extensively. He was also a pioneer in the study of early bookbinding, and a staunch promoter of Gothic Revival architecture. Biography Weale was born in Marylebone, London, in 1832 as the son of James Weale (died 1838) and Susan de Vezian (died 1855). His father was the librarian to John Baker Holroyd, 1st Earl of Sheffield and had a large book collection of his own. Weale had two sisters Henrietta and the philanthropist Charlotte Julia Weale. Weale studied at King's College London between 1843 and 1848. He was the headmaster at a school in Islington. Oscar Roels
Oscar August Roels (2 November 1864, in Ghent – 29 October 1938, in Ghent) was a Flemish composer and conductor. He was a student of Adolphe Samuel and Karel Miry at the Royal Conservatory of Ghent. Later on, he became a teacher at this institute, where he also conducted its choir and orchestra. As a student, he played the organ at the Jesuit church of Ghent, and later on he became an organist at the Saint-Barbaracollege. As a conductor, he worked at the Royal Opera of Ghent and the Royal Dutch Theatre of Antwerp. Aside of these, he also conducted several choir- and concert-societies of Ghent, including the ''Société Royale des Mélomanes''. Roels oeuvre contains theater music, operettas, orchestral works, chamber music, songs, and pieces for organ. Eugène Laermans
Eugène Jules Joseph Baron Laermans (22 October 1864 – 22 February 1940) was a Belgian painter. Life He was born in Sint-Jans-Molenbeek. At the age of eleven, he contracted meningitis, which left him deaf and nearly mute (although some sources say he was born deaf). This concentrated his attention on his sense of sight, and led to his decision to become a painter. He enrolled at the Académie Royale des Beaux-Arts in 1887, where he studied with Jean-François Portaels and was a great admirer of the paintings of Félicien Rops. The writings of Charles Baudelaire were also an influence, so Laermans joined the Decadent movement in 1890 and created illustrations for Baudelaire's book ''Les Fleurs du mal''. By 1893, his work resembled that of Bruegel rather than the decadents, and he had settled on his signature theme, portrayals of downtrodden laborers and poor peasants which some critics saw as "disturbing caricatures". Blanche Arral
Blanche Arral (10 October 1864 – 3 March 1945) was a Belgian coloratura soprano. Born Clara Lardinois in Liège, Belgium, the youngest of 17 children, she studied under Mathilde Marchesi, Mathilde Graumann Marchesi in Paris. She debuted in a small part in the 1884 world premiere of Jules Massenet's ''Manon''. Arral performed in various opera houses in Brussels, Paris and St. Petersburg before moving to the United States. In 1901 she was with a touring company in Indochina, while waiting for the 1902 Hanoi exhibition, Exposition of Hanoi to open, performing at Haiphong and the Hanoi Opera House. In October 1909 she debuted at Carnegie Hall and joined the Metropolitan Opera for the 1909–1910 season. She received her voice instruction from Mathilde Marchesi, Mathilde Graumann Marchesi. Princess Stéphanie Clotilde Louise Herminie Marie Charlotte of Belgium (21 May 1864 – 23 August 1945) was a Belgian princess who became Crown Princess of Austria through marriage to Crown Prince Rudolf, heir to the throne of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. Princess Stéphanie was the second daughter of King Leopold II of Belgium and Marie Henriette of Austria. She married in Vienna on 10 May 1881 Crown Prince Rudolf, son and heir of Emperor Franz Joseph I of Austria. They had one child, Archduchess Elisabeth Marie. Stéphanie's marriage quickly became fragile. Rudolf, depressed and disappointed by politics, had multiple extramarital affairs and contracted a venereal disease that he transmitted to his wife, rendering her unable to conceive again.
