Hobart
Hobart ( ; Nuennonne/Palawa kani: ''nipaluna'') is the capital and most populous city of the Australian island state of Tasmania. Bendigo Petition
The Bendigo Petition was an attempt by miners in the colony of Victoria (now part of the Commonwealth of Australia) to demand reasonable limits to taxation and improved access to land from Governor La Trobe, a representative of the British Government. In particular the miners requested reform of license fees applicable to miners on the gold fields. The Bendigo Petition built on the earlier demands enunciated by miners at the Forest Creek Monster Meeting of 1851. The Anti-Gold Licence Association was formed by G E Thomson, Dr Jones and Edward Brown at Bendigo on 6 June 1853. Over 23,000 signatures were gathered for the Association's petition. An additional 8000 signatures from the nearby McIvor (Heathcote) diggings were lost as a result of the robbery of a gold escort in July 1853. Bendigo ( ) is a city in Victoria (Australia), Victoria, Australia, located in the Bendigo Valley near the geographical centre of the state and approximately north-west of Melbourne, the state capital. As of 2019, Bendigo had an urban population of 100,991, making it Australia's 19th-largest city, fourth-largest inland city and the fourth-most populous city in Victoria (Australia), Victoria. Anti-Gold Licence Association
The Anti-Gold Licence Association, was formed in Bendigo, Victoria, Australia on 6 June 1853. The Association's protest became known as the Red Ribbon Rebellion, since at meetings in June and July thousands of miners gathered, wearing red ribbons around their hats, to show their solidarity in opposing the conditions imposed upon them by the government. On 26 July 1853 Governor La Trobe was presented with a petition drawn up by the Association, and undersigned by more than 23,000 miners from the region. The miners objected to the high miner's licence fee of 30 shillings per month, and resolved to pay only 10 shillings in licence fees and, if this was refused, to pay no more fees at all. All miners supporting the resolution would continue to wear red ribbons around their hats as a symbol of defiance. St Kilda Road Robberies
It is widely believed that in the tumultuous years following the Victorian gold rush that a number of robberies by armed bandits, known in Australia as bushrangers, took place on St Kilda Road, then a track through the scrub from the city to the seaside settlement of St Kilda. However only two events are recorded, and only one took place on today's St Kilda Road. It was probably the audacity of the first event, which was depicted in a famous ''Bushrangers on the St Kilda Road,'' painted 30 years after the event, that gave rise to the later reputation for hold-ups.
