Erasmus Montanus
''Erasmus Montanus'' is a satirical play about academic snobbery set in rural Denmark. Written by Ludvig Holberg in 1722, the script was first published in 1731 and performed in 1747. Today, it is among Holberg's most frequently performed works. The play centers on its eponymous protagonist who returns to his rural village after studying in Copenhagen to find his new worldview causes conflicts in his everyday life. History The script was written in 1722 and 1723, but was not published until 1731 in the 5th volume of ''Den Danske Skue-Plads'', a collection of plays by Holberg. The play itself then did not premier until 1747. It is likely that Holberg delayed its release to avoid backlash because of the play's critical nature. The play criticises the academic profession that Holberg himself was a part of and the educational pedagogy he experienced at the University of Copenhagen as a Professor of Metaphysics. Knut Helle
Knut Helle (19 December 1930 – 27 June 2015) was a Norwegian historian. A professor at the University of Bergen from 1973 to 2000, he specialized in the late medieval history of Norway. He has contributed to several large works. Early life, education and marriage He was born in Larvik as the son of school inspector Hermann Olai Helle (1893–1973) and teacher Berta Marie Malm (1906–1991). He was the older brother of politician Ingvar Lars Helle. The family moved to Hetland when Knut Helle was seventeen years old. He took the examen artium in Stavanger in 1949, and a teacher's education in Kristiansand in 1952. He studied philology in Oslo and Bergen, and graduated with the cand.philol. degree in 1957. is the largest Norwegian biographical encyclopedia. The first edition (NBL1) was issued between 1921 and 1983, including 19 volumes and 5,100 articles. Jens Essendrop (24 November 1723 – 12 December 1801) was a Norwegian clergyman, mining official and topographical writer. He was born in Christiania, a son of priest Søren Essendrop and Pauline Holst. He served as mining officer ( no, overbergamtsforvalter) in Kongsberg from 1771. His work ''Physisk Oeconomisk Beskrivelse over Lier Præstegield'' introduced the topographical descriptions of parishes as a literary genre in Norway, and became a model for succeeding writers. Peter Ascanius
Peter Ascanius (24 May 1723 – 4 June 1803) was a Norwegian-Danish biologist and geologist. He was a professor of zoology and mineralogy. Early life and education He was born at Aure in Møre og Romsdal, Norway. In 1742 he graduated from Trondheim Cathedral School and attended the University of Copenhagen where he studied medicine and took a Bachelor's degree in 1747. From 1752 he stayed a couple of years at Uppsala University where he was a student of Carl Linnaeus (1707–1778). He studied natural history with Linnaeus and chemistry and metallurgy with Johan Gottschalk Wallerius (1709–1785). Ascanius undertook a study trip in the years 1753 to 1758, visiting the Netherlands, England, France, Italy and Austria. Ludvig Daae (priest)
Ludvig Daae (May 9, 1723 – February 18, 1786) was a Norwegian priest and landowner. Daae was born in Vik in Sogn og Fjordane Counties of Norway, county, the son of Anders Daae (priest), Anders Daae (1680–1763) and Birgitte Munthe. He received a master's degree in philosophy in 1746, after which he used the title ''Mag.'' or ''Magister'' 'master'. Daae served as the parish priest in Lindås from 1759 onward. Daae married Drude Cathrine Haar (1739–1787) when she was 15 years old. He had 15 children with her, and several of his children and grandchildren served as priests and officers in Western Norway. Ascanius (; Ancient Greek: Ἀσκάνιος) (said to have reigned 1176-1138 BC) was a legendary king of Alba Longa and is the son of the Trojan hero Aeneas and Creusa, daughter of Priam.
