James Graham, 1st Duke Of Montrose
James Graham, 1st Duke and 4th Marquess of Montrose (April 16827 January 1742) was a Scottish aristocratic statesman in the early eighteenth century. Life He was the only son of James Graham, 3rd Marquess of Montrose and Lady Christian Leslie. On 31 March 1702 he married Christian Carnegie, daughter of David Carnegie, 3rd Earl of Northesk. Together they had several sons, including William Graham and Lord George Graham. Originally the fourth Marquess of Montrose, James was elevated to a dukedom in 1707, as a reward for his important support of the Act of Union, whilst being Lord President of the Scottish Privy Council. He was Lord High Admiral of Scotland from 1705 to 1706. He was Keeper of the Privy Seal of Scotland from 1709 to 1713 and served as Keeper of the Great Seal of Scotland from 1716 to 1733. James Hamilton, 8th Earl Of Abercorn
James Hamilton, 8th Earl of Abercorn PC (Ire) (22 October 1712 – 9 October 1789), styled Lord Paisley from 1734 to 1736, was an Anglo-Irish peer. He inherited large estates in Ireland, where he built a mansion, and re-acquired some of the family's ancestral lands in Scotland. Biography The eldest son of James Hamilton, 7th Earl of Abercorn and Anne Plumer, he was born in Queen Square, London on 22 October 1712. He matriculated at Christ Church, Oxford on 10 October 1729. On 22 March 1736 he was summoned to the Irish House of Lords by writ of acceleration as Baron Mountcastle. He succeeded his father as Earl of Abercorn in 1744. By the time of his succession, the family's lands in Scotland had long since been dissipated. He began to reassemble them, purchasing the feudal barony of Duddingston in Edinburgh in 1745. Sir James Steuart, 3rd Baronet of Goodtrees and 7th Baronet of Coltness (; 21 October 1712 – 26 November 1780), also known as Sir James Steuart Denham and Sir James Denham Steuart, was a prominent Scottish Jacobite and author of "probably the first systematic treatise written in English about economics" and the first book in English with 'political economy' in the title. He assumed the surname of Denham late in life; he inherited his cousin's baronetcy of Coltness in 1773. Early life He was one of 12 children of Sir James Steuart, Solicitor General for Scotland under Queen Anne and George I, and was born in Edinburgh. Alison Cockburn also Alison Rutherford, or Alicia Cockburn (8 October 171222 November 1794) was a Scottish poet, wit and socialite who collected a circle of eminent friends in 18th-century enlightenment Edinburgh including Walter Scott, Robert Burns and David Hume. James Veitch, Lord Elliock FRSE (25 September 1712 – 1 July 1793) was a Scottish advocate, judge, politician and landowner who became a Senator of the College of Justice. Life He was born in Edinburgh in September 1712, the son of Christian Thomson, daughter of Gavin Thomson, Provost of Peebles, and William Veitch of Elliock House near Dumfries, a Writer to the Signet (WS) who died in 1747. Veitch studied law at the University of Edinburgh, Leyden University and Halle University. While in Germany he met and apparently befriended Frederick the Great.
