Bylong
Bylong is a village in New South Wales, Australia, in the Mid-Western Regional Council. It is located on the Bylong Valley Way. The area is home to numerous horse studs. The champion racehorse and sire Heroic was born in the area. Bylong hosts an annual Mouse racing event. Access Bylong can be accessed from the Hunter Region by travelling west along the Golden Highway and turn onto the Bylong Valley Way, before Sandy Hollow. If travelling from Ilford, Bylong can be accessed by travelling north along the Castlereagh Highway and turn onto the Bylong Valley Way. Railways Bylong has a railway crossing loop, east of Bylong on the Sandy Hollow–Gulgong (originally Maryvale) railway line. The railway passes through a tunnel in the Bylong Range, to the east-southeast () between the Bylong River and Murrumbo Creek valleys. Bylong Valley Way
Bylong Valley Way is a New South Wales country road linking the Golden Highway near Sandy Hollow to the Castlereagh Highway near Ilford. It is named after the Bylong Valley, through which the road passes. Route In conjunction with the Bathurst-Ilford Road to Bathurst, this quiet, scenic route provides a leisurely alternative to going through Sydney to travel between the Hunter Region and Central Tablelands. History The passing of the ''Main Roads Act of 1924'' through the Parliament of New South Wales provided for the declaration of Main Roads, roads partially funded by the State government through the Main Roads Board (later the Department of Main Roads, and eventually Transport for NSW). Rylstone is a small town in New South Wales, Australia, in the Central Tablelands region within the Mid-Western Regional Council local government area. Bylong River
Bylong River, a perennial river of the Hunter River catchment, is located in the Central Tablelands and Upper Hunter regions of New South Wales, Australia. Course Bylong River rises in the central tablelands of the Capertee Valley, within Wollemi National Park, on the north-western slopes of the Great Dividing Range, below Goat Mountain, and flows generally north-east, joined by seven tributaries, including the Growee River, before reaching its confluence with the Goulburn River, north of the village of Bylong. The river descends over its course. The Goulburn River eventually flows into the Hunter River, a major waterway which flows into the Tasman Sea at Newcastle. Sandy Hollow–Gulgong Railway Line
The Sandy Hollow–Gulgong railway line is a railway line in eastern New South Wales, Australia. The line forms a cross country connection from the Main North line in the Upper Hunter region to the Gwabegar line in the Central West region. The line is approximately in length. From the Gwabegar line, trains can then ultimately reach the Main West line creating a circuitous bypass of Sydney for freight traffic heading between the west and north of New South Wales. The line was opened in 1985. History The Sandy Hollow Line between Sandy Hollow, Gulgong and Maryvale, (between Wellington and Dubbo), was originally surveyed in 1860 as a more easily graded crossing of the Great Dividing Range than the Blue Mountains line nearer to Sydney. Baerami, New South Wales
Baerami is a locality in the Muswellbrook Shire in the Upper Hunter region of New South Wales, Australia. The Bylong Valley Way crosses the Baerami Creek via Kirks Bridge at Baerami. Downstream of the bridge, the creek meets its confluence with the Goulburn River. The name of Baerami is associated with a deposit of oil shale, which was reputedly the largest in New South Wales and around twice the size of that at Glen Davis. However, the site where mining occurred on lies Baerami Creek, approximately 25 km south of the road junction near the crossing of Baerami Creek at Baerami, in the adjacent locality of Baerami Creek. Castlereagh Highway
Castlereagh Highway is a state highway located in New South Wales and Queensland, Australia. The highway's northern terminus is at a junction with Carnarvon Highway, south of , Queensland. Its southern terminus is at a junction with Great Western Highway at Marrangaroo, north-west of Lithgow. From north to south the highway traverses South West Queensland and the North West Slopes, Orana, and Central West regions of New South Wales. The highway is part of the Great Inland Way linking Sydney and Cairns, and provides all-weather access to rugged black opal country of Lightning Ridge. Kandos, New South Wales
Kandos is a small town in the Central Tablelands of New South Wales, Australia, within Mid-Western Regional Council. The area is the traditional home of the Dabee tribe, of the Wiradjuri people. The town sits beneath Cumber Melon Mountain (from the Aboriginal name Combamolang), in a district formerly known as Coomber. Kandos shares its locality, employment and infrastructure with the neighbouring town Rylstone, 6 kilometres away. At the 2021 census, Kandos had a population of 1263 and Rylstone 904. Mid-Western Regional Council
The Mid-Western Regional Council is a local government area in the Central West region of New South Wales, Australia. The area is located adjacent to the Castlereagh Highway that passes through the middle of the area in an approximate southeast–northwest direction. Mid-Western Regional Council was proclaimed on 26 May 2004 and incorporates the whole of the former Mudgee Shire Council and parts of the former Merriwa and Rylstone Shires. The Mid-Western Regional Council also incorporated the area of the historic Wyaldra Shire, which was abolished in an earlier round of local government amalgamations. Upper Hunter is an electoral district of the Legislative Assembly in the Australian state of New South Wales. Heroic (horse)
Heroic (1921–1939) was an Australian Thoroughbred racehorse who won 21 races from 5 furlongs (1,000 metres) to 2 miles (3,200m) and was a leading sire in Australia. Breeding Heroic was sired by Valais (by the 1905 Epsom Derby winner, Cicero), his dam was Chersonese (GB) by Cyglad. This made him inbred twice in the 3rd generation to Cyllene and in the 3rd and 4th generations (4x3) to Illuminata through the half sisters Gas, dam of Cicero and Chelandry. Heroic was a brother to the useful sire, Thracian and a half-brother to the stakeswinner, Cimbrian. Heroic was an outstanding type of yearling that fetched the top price of 1,800 guineas at the Inglis’ bloodstock sales.
