Butare
Butare (), also known as Huye, is a city (population: 50,220 as of 2012) in the Southern Province of Rwanda and the capital of Huye district. It is the fourth largest town in Rwanda by population. History The Belgian colonial rulers established it in the 1920s and named the city ''Astrida'', in honor of Queen Astrid of Belgium, The government of Rwanda changed the name of the city when it gained independence in 1962. Education The University of Rwanda Butare campus was founded in 2013. Before that, the Butare campus went by the name of National University of Rwanda subsequent its foundation in 1963. Due to the large number of university students and student-centered activities in the city, Butare is often regarded as a university city. It also held the Nyakibanda Seminary and the Rwandan National Institute of Scientific Research. Roman Catholic Diocese Of Butare
The Roman Catholic Diocese of Butare is an ecclesiastical territory or diocese of the Roman Catholic Church in Rwanda. It was erected on 11 September 1961 as the Diocese of Astrida by Pope John XXIII, and was later renamed as the Diocese of Butare on 12 November 1963 by Pope Paul VI. The diocese is a suffragan of the Archdiocese of Kigali. Philippe Rukamba was appointed Bishop of Butare by Pope John Paul II on 2 January 1997. A prominent priest of this diocese was Msgr Eulad Rudahunga, serving from 1953 to 2019, and made a Monsignor by Pope John Paul II. National University Of Rwanda
The National University of Rwanda (NUR; rw, Kaminuza nkuru y’u Rwanda, french: Université nationale du Rwanda, UNR) was the largest university in Rwanda. It was located at in the city of Butare and was established in 1963 by the government in cooperation with the Congregation of the Dominicans from the Province of Quebec, Canada. Its founder and first rector was Father Georges-Henri Lévesque. When it was established, the NUR had three divisions (Faculties of Medicine and Social Sciences, and a Teacher Training College), 51 students and 16 lecturers. The university suffered badly during the genocide and had to close in 1994, reopening in April 1995. At that time English was introduced as a medium of instruction alongside French. Groupe Scolaire Officiel De Butare
The Groupe Scolaire Officiel de Butare (GSOB) Indatwa n’inkesha, also known as the Indatwa n'Inkesha School, is a historic secondary school in Huye District in Butare (formerly Astrida), Rwanda. As well as being the oldest secondary school in the country, it is regarded as one of the most prestigious and successful public schools in Rwanda. The school, originally known as the Groupe Scolaire d'Astrida, was established by the Brothers of Charity in 1929. It was intended to educate students who would form an élite to serve as chiefs and medical, agricultural, and veterinary assistants in the Belgian mandatory administration in Ruanda-Urundi. It took students, often the children of chiefs and other dignitaries, from both modern-day Rwanda and Burundi. Between 1932 and 1957, the Groupe Scolaire d'Astrida admitted 964 students from Rwanda including 739 ethnic Tutsi and 177 ethnic Hutu. Huye District
Huye is one of the eight districts (''Akarere'') that make up Rwanda's Southern Province. It has a total surface area of 581.5 square Kilometers. It has thirteen sectors and 77 cells with a total of 508 umudugudus (villages) in total. The district has a population of 328,298, with an average of 581 inhabitants per square kilometer. The largest city in the province is Butare. Geography and education Huye borders with Nyanza district in the North, Gisagara in the east and south, Nyaruguru in the south west and Nyamagabe in the north west. The hilly landscape protrudes from east to west but develops into a steep hilly and mountainous area as one moves towards the west and north west. Nyakibanda Seminary
The Saint Charles Borromeo Major Seminary of Nyakibanda is a Roman Catholic seminary near to Butare, in the Gishamvu sector of the Huye District in Southern Province of Rwanda, below the mountain chain called "Ibisi bya Nyakibanda". It is about from Butare. Overview The Nyakibanda Major Seminary was created in 1936. The seminary is under the jurisdiction of the Conference of Bishops of Rwanda, who in turn are under the Holy See in Rome, which is represented by the Congregation for the Evangelization of Peoples. As of 2007 there were 186 seminarians taking the four-year course. As of 2011 the rector was father Antoine Kambanda. Kambanda was appointed in February 2006. He replaced Monseigneur Smaragde Mbonyintege, who had been named a bishop.
