Business Of Design Week
Business of Design Week (BODW) is an annual week-long design event organised every December by the Hong Kong Design Centre. BODW was launched in 2002. It includes a design conference, forums, seminars, exhibitions and award presentations. BODW annually invites designers, business leaders and educators to speak and share their opinions in various forums. Past speakers include Marcel Wanders, Rem Koolhaas, Raman Hui, Rossana Hu, Richard Hutten, Zaha Hadid, Tom Dixon, Michael Young, Jimmy Choo, Sir John Sorrell, Karim Rashid, Ross Lovegrove, Marc Newson, and Vivienne Tam Vivienne Tam (, born 28 November 1957) is a fashion designer based in New York City. John Sorrell (designer)
Sir John Sorrell (born 28 February 1945) is a British designer and an advocate and campaigner for creative education and for the creative industries. Early life Sorrell was born in London in 1945 during an air raid in the Second World War. He attended Saturday morning art classes at Hornsey School of Art when he was 14. He then studied art and design there full-time between the ages of 16 and 19. His experience of Saturday morning art classes inspired his later foundation of the National Art & Design Saturday Club. Career John Sorrell set up his first business, Goodwin Sorrell, in 1964 with Chuck Goodwin. He co-founded the design and identity business Newell and Sorrell in 1976 with his wife, Frances Newell. The couple became one of Europe's biggest and most successful identity consultancies, with clients including British Airways, the Body Shop and the Royal Mail. Vivienne Tam
Vivienne Tam (, born 28 November 1957) is a fashion designer based in New York City. She was born in Guangzhou, Guangdong, China, and moved to Hong Kong at the age of three. She attended the Hong Kong Polytechnic University. Tam's fashion brand is named after her and is inspired by Chinese culture, design, modern fashion, and east–west fusion. The theme of her first collection was EAST WIND CODE. She authored ''China Chic'', a book in which she explored the ways in which Chinese style meets Western style and described elements of the Chinese culture like her mother's cheongsam that had the most impact on her. She also discussed how Chinese culture intertwined with Western style and influenced her future work. Marc Newson
Marc Andrew Newson CBE RDI (born 20 October 1963) is an industrial designer who works in aircraft cabin design, product design, furniture design, jewellery, and clothing. His style uses smooth geometric lines, translucency, strength, transparency, and tends to have an absence of sharp edges. Career Newson was born in Sydney, Australia, and in 1984 he graduated at the Sydney College of the Arts in Sydney, Australia studying jewellery and sculpture. In 1986 he was awarded a grant from the Australian Crafts Council and staged a first exhibition featuring the Lockheed Lounge. The following year he moved to Tokyo, where he mostly worked with the designer company Idée and where he created works such as the Super Guppy lamp (1987) and the Orgone lounge (1989). Ross Lovegrove
Ross Lovegrove (born 1958 in Cardiff, Wales) is a Welsh artist and industrial designer. Biography Ross Lovegrove was born in Wales in 1958. He studied at Manchester Polytechnic (now Manchester Metropolitan University), graduating with a First Class BA in Industrial Design in 1980. In 1983, he graduated from the Royal College of Art with a Master of Design. In the early 1980s he worked with Hartmut Esslinger as a designer for frog design on projects such as Walkmans for Sony, and Computers for Apple Computers; he later moved to Paris to work for Knoll International, and also collaborated with Jean Nouvel and Phillipe Stark. in the late 1980s, he returned to London, and in 1990 he founded a practice of his own, Studio X. Michael Young (industrial Designer)
Michael Young (born 23 August 1966) is a British industrial designer and creative director based in Hong Kong. He works in the areas of product, furniture and interior design with studios in Hong Kong and Brussels. He is known for unconventional use of materials and manufacturing processes, and collaborations with brands such as KEF, Coalesse and MOKE International. Tom Dixon (industrial Designer)
Tom Dixon, OBE (born 21 May 1959 in Sfax, Tunisia) is a self-taught British designer. He is best known as the Creative Director of the eponymous brand 'Tom Dixon', which specializes in the design of lighting, furniture and accessories. His works have been acquired by museums across the globe, including London's Victoria and Albert Museum, the Museum of Modern Art New York and Centre Georges Pompidou, Paris, France Career Tom Dixon was the bass guitarist in the band Funkapolitan.
