Bury Rural District
Bury was a rural district in Lancashire, England from its establishment in 1894 under the Local Government Act 1894, until its abolition in 1933. The district consisted of a number of rural civil parishes near Bury, but did not include Bury itself. It was a successor to the Bury Rural Sanitary District. It originally included Tottington, which was made an urban district of its own in 189 In its later form, the district consisted of five parishes split between four disconnected fragments (exclaves), which were north-east ( Birtle cum Bamford and Walmersley cum Shuttleworth), south (Unsworth), south-west ( Outwood) and west ( Ainsworth) of Bury itself. The district was abolished and its parishes split up between various urban districts in 1933, under the review caused by the Local Government Act 1929. Unsworth is a village and residential area of the Metropolitan Borough of Bury, in Greater Manchester, England. The population of Unsworth Ward, as of the United Kingdom Census 2011, 2011 census is 9,492. The Local Government Act 1929 was an Act of the Parliament of the United Kingdom that made changes to the Poor Law and local government in England and Wales. The Act abolished the system of poor law unions in England and Wales and their boards of guardians, transferring their powers to local authorities. It also gave county councils increased powers over highways, and made provisions for the restructuring of urban and rural districts as more efficient local government areas. Walmersley Cum Shuttleworth
Walmersley is a suburban village in the Metropolitan Borough of Bury, Greater Manchester, England. History Historically in Lancashire, the name Walmersley is said to be derived from Old English, and translates as Waldmer's wood, or clearing. Once a rural village in the wilds, in recent decades, it has become a northern suburb of Bury. Old stone cottages remain in the area, but much of the district's housing is of post-war construction. The A56 (Walmersley Road) links Walmersley with Bury to the south and Shuttleworth, Ramsbottom and Edenfield to the north. Before this 'new' road was built the road north from Bury followed the line of Walmersley Old Road.
