Burmah Road, George Town
Burmah Road is a major thoroughfare in the city of George Town in Penang, Malaysia. It is one of the main roads leading out of the city centre to the suburbs, stretching from the heart of George Town towards Pulau Tikus. Along its western section, the long Burmah Road cuts through the centre of Pulau Tikus, serving as the main thoroughfare for the suburb as well. Burmah Road is one of the few places worldwide that was named after the nation state of Burma (now Myanmar). As its name implies, the road was once home to a significant Burmese community. In addition, ethnic Eurasians and Thais still live at or around the vicinity of the road within Pulau Tikus, contributing to the street's multicultural character. Tikus Island
Tikus Island (Rat Island) is an islet off the northern coast of Penang Island in the State of Penang, Malaysia. Located nearly off Tanjung Bungah, a suburb of the city of George Town, this uninhabited outcrop is now home to a solar-powered lighthouse. This active lighthouse marks the northern entrance to the Penang Strait and hence, the Port of Penang. Also situated on the islet is a grave belonging to a local Muslim saint. The grave is still visited by local Penangites of various faiths, who occasionally come to seek blessings irrespective of their beliefs. Etymology The islet has lent its name to Pulau Tikus, another suburb of George Town. The settlement of Pulau Tikus was established by Eurasian refugees in the early 19th century, who had earlier landed on Tikus Island. Queen Victoria Memorial, Penang
The Queen Victoria Memorial in George Town, Penang is a monument to Queen Victoria, begun after her death, located at the Penang Chinese Recreation Club. Penang's Victoria Memorial takes the form of a large piece of land known as "Victoria Green," and a statue at the edge of Victoria Green at the junction of Burmah Road and Pangkor Road, the establishment of each being years apart from the other. Prangin Road, George Town
Prangin Road is a major thoroughfare in the city of George Town in Penang, Malaysia. The one-way road, one of the busiest in the city centre, forms the southernmost limit of the city's UNESCO World Heritage Site and runs along some of the city's major landmarks, including Komtar and Prangin Mall. Prangin Road was named after a canal that once ran through the area. For much of the 19th century, the Prangin Canal marked the southernmost limits of George Town. The canal has since been disused, while the construction of Komtar in the 1970s heralded more modern forms of urbanisation along Prangin Road.
