Mary Ivy Burks
Mary Ivy Burks (December 11, 1920 – February 16, 2007) was an environmental activist who helped create and served as the first president of the Alabama Conservancy, an organization aimed at preserving Alabama's environment. Biography Burks was born Mary Louise Ivy in Birmingham, Alabama, to Earl and Lorene Ivy, on December 11, 1920. She obtained her degree in English from Birmingham–Southern College in 1942. After graduating, she began working as a reporter for the local newspaper, the ''Birmingham Post''. In 1946, she married organic chemist Robert E Burks Jr. The two had a son, Robert Ivy Burks, and she spent most of her time caring for their child. While volunteering in the community she met Blanche Evans Dean, an activist and self-trained botanist in the area. Treylon Burks (born March 23, 2000) is an American football wide receiver for the Tennessee Titans of the National Football League (NFL). He played college football at Arkansas and was drafted by the Titans in the first round of the 2022 NFL Draft. Early life and high school career Burks was born on March 23, 2000, in Flint, Michigan and grew up in Warren, Arkansas. He attended Warren High School, where he played wide receiver for their football team and totaled 151 receptions for 3,403 yards and 43 touchdowns. He missed most of his senior season in 2018 after tearing his ACL. On July 30, 2018, he committed to the University of Arkansas to play college football. Frances Ruth Coker Burks (born March 19, 1959), also known as the Cemetery Angel, is a former caregiver of AIDS crisis victims and an AIDS awareness advocate based in Arkansas. During the AIDS epidemic in the late 1980s, she used her salary as a real estate agent to care for AIDS patients whose families and communities had abandoned them. Due to the stigma surrounding the disease at the time, she was often the patients' only caregiver until they eventually died. She is additionally recognized for burying a number of AIDS victims in Hot Springs, Arkansas. Leslie Robert Burks, A.S.C. (July 4, 1909 – May 11, 1968) was an American cinematographer who worked in many genres, in both black-and-white and color, and who collaborated a number of times with Alfred Hitchcock. Biography Robert Burks was born in Chino California on July 4, 1909. Aged nineteen, he found work as a special effects technician in the Warner Brother's Lab, the industry's largest special effects facility at the time. Burks rose through the ranks at Warner Bros, first promoted to assistant cameraman in 1929, and then on to operating cameraman in 1934 and special effects cinematographer by 1938. He was finally promoted to Director of Photography in 1944. With his last promotion at age 35, Burks became the youngest fully accredited DP in the industry.
