Burke Mountain Academy is a full-year private college-preparatory school in the northeastern United States, located in East Burke, Vermont. It educates and trains alpine ski racing athletes on the slopes of adjacent Burke Mountain Ski Area. Overview Burke Mountain Academy (BMA), located in the Northeast Kingdom of Vermont in Caledonia County, is a full-year private college-preparatory school that educates and trains alpine ski racing athletes on the slopes of nearby Burke Mountain Ski Area. The school was founded in 1970 when “... Martha Coughlin approached coach Warren Witherell seeking year-round training to help her achieve her dream of being named to the U.S. Ski Team.” It was the first ski academy in North America. In 2020, there are numerous ski academies in the U.S. and Canada. BMA has, in addition to alpine ski racers, trained nordic skiers throughout the school’s 50 year history. Thomas Grandi
Thomas Grandi (born 27 December 1972 in Bolzano, Italy) is a Canadian retired alpine skier. He specialized in technical skiing giant slalom and slalom. Skiing career Grandi started in the Alpine Skiing World Cup in the 1992-93 season. His first top ten finish in the World Cup came in December 1996 where he finished in 10th position in the Giant Slalom in Alta Badia, Italy. In the 1997-98 World Cup season, he had his first top three finish when he finished in third place in a Giant Slalom race in Park City. Grandi's first wins in the World Cup both came in December 2004, when he won Giant Slaloms in Alta Badia and Flachau. The victory at Alta Badia made Grandi the first Canadian male skier to win a World Cup technical race. Elizabeth "Liz" Stephen (born January 12, 1987, in East Montpelier, Vermont) is a retired American cross-country skier who competed between 2005 and 2018. Nolan Kasper (born March 27, 1989) is a World Cup alpine ski racer from the United States. He competes in the technical events and specializes in the slalom. Born in Morristown, New Jersey, Kasper began skiing at age three at Hidden Valley ski area in northern New Jersey, where his father was a ski instructor. Kasper is a graduate of the Burke Mountain Academy in Vermont and attends Dartmouth College in the off-season.
